I made the long drive out to this course last weekend and was pleasantly surprised. The first surprise was the greens fee - $39 for Saturday AM. The second surprise was the course was beautiful, along the river and on a mountainside. I learned that the course had a new owner and was managed by David Love Golf. Conditions were very good, A little wet in spots from over-watering.

Scenic and a great test of skill. It's had management issues in the past but last week it was the best I've seen it in a long while. Conditions were good and it reminded me of the course I fell in love with when it opened years ago. It's a tough sell because of the location but worth the time and effort if you have a day to spend.

Great condition for early spring. Beautiful layout along the river and with a couple of holes down a mountain. In the middle of nowhere, but worth the drive. Decent price. Friendly staff.

This "undiscovered gem" was quite well known the day I visited recently, meaning it was fairly crowded. Reasonably good conditions, compared to some of the poor ratings previously posted, but it's rough around the edges. For example, sand in poor shape and a few questionable greens. Course knowledge is helpful here and the layout doesn't appeal to everyone, but it's a nice setting and a solid golf course. Good clubhouse and outside cookout food.

Played this course on Labor Day and on n the plus side, friendly starter and staff, and they bring the cart to your car upon arrival and pick it up after you're done. On the downside, this course really needs work. Greens were just aerated, which I can understand, but there were SO many dead spots on and around the greens. Rough was way too long and weedy. Clearly the maintenance is lacking. Great scenic views, though. Worth a play if you have a coupon.

Played on a Saturday and truly enjoyed this course. Started at 2pm and didn't have to wait behind another group until the back nine. Even with some waiting, was able to play in a little over 4 hours. Nice hole variety and great views all around. Course was in great condition. The only downside was the bugs. I would play this course more often if it were closer.

Course is in "decent" shape, but once again, the service was terrible. We had a foursome that teed off on Sat. morning, and had to let 2 twosomes go through on the first 5 holes; which delayed us. We were then told by the marshal to pick up the pace of play on 10, then 12, 14, and 16. We explained the situation, but continued to get harassed. It took us just under 5 hours to finish on a cart-path only Saturday, which is not bad at all. Hope they can improve their customer service.

Tried this course for the first time and what a find! I had never heard of this place until recently. For early spring, it's in great condition. Most courses would like greens in this condition in midsummer. Given the cost of other high-end courses in the area, this place is a bargain; worth the long drive.

I played the course over the busy Labor Day weekend and loved it. My round did have some issues which prevent me from giving this course an eagle: some of the greens were in bad shape, bugs everywhere and an extremely slow pace of play; 6 hour round. Despite these negatives, I liked the course, especially the 14th and 15th holes. Plenty of great scenery. The staff was very polite. I will play this course again.

My favorite course in the NOVA area. Course is in excellent shape, especially considering the drought conditions. They have really stepped up to the plate here to keep everything in great shape. Outstanding course, outstanding value, and some of the best scenery of any course in the area, bar none.

The course is beautiful with great views. It's very peaceful to spend time at a course with the views of the river and the mountains.

I hadn't played here in a while, but got back last week. Views are still amazing & beautiful (not playing through the back yards of condos or McMansions!) The staff continues to be friendly, and attentive to customers. Tees and fairways are still average.. About what they have always been. Some very good areas, some areas with unfilled divots or spotty turf. Grass on a couple of tees had died. Unfortunately, the greens have declined from what they once were.

After a change in ownership last year, the course is coming back to much better condition. What once were some of the best greens in the area, are now just average, running slower than in the past. They have improved since last year. The clubhouse is small, with no locker room. I always find the staff friendly. The lady who grills great hamburgers outdoors at the turn is a favorite of regulars. Pace of play can be very slow at times, with the marshals doing little to speed play. Only one badly designed hole, No. 13, with a very badly sloped green that has no good pin positions and will not hold shots. Not what it once was, but still the best value in the area for the money and great views.

Played on 5/16 and I agree with Jimbo's comments there are gnats so be prepared. There are a couple of holes in which there are some problems in the fairway but overall I liked the course and the view on 14 was great I thought the speed of the greens were good and the staff was super friendly. Played as a single and got off on the back first b/c others were teeing off on 1 so I was able to get done in 3 1/2 hours.

Fellow golfers, here is a more current update. The fairways are now in good condition and the greens are looking good too. However, some had some fungus growth on them, but they seem to be being worked on. The views at this course certainly can't beat and worth a trip if you haven't been here before. Front nine straddles some of the Shenandoah River and back nine takes you up high for wonderful views. One important note, there are LOTS of gnats, so make sure you bring your bug spray.

Only reason I didn't give a lower rating is because the layout and views are nice. Tees, rough, and greens were in good shape, although the greens had just been aerated and were sandy (some more so than others). However, the fairways were absolutely ATROCIOUS! I've honestly never seen anything like it. All the fairways had areas that were pretty much bare dirt, and the "grass" that did exist was clumps of weeds. The rough was 100 times better than the "fairways". I hope things improve.

Great layout, amazing views of the mountains and the Shenandoah River. The fairways are a mess though - the staff said it was because of a dry summer. Greens are in perfect shape. Friendly staff, pace was fine. Hopefully the course will get in better shape for next season. The views from the tee on #14 are the best you'll find around here.

Didn't like this course at all. Service was sub-par. The greens are so-so. Conditions in general are only "okay". Not bad for the money, but there are so many other good courses around and more centrally located to the DC metro area that this one isn't worth the drive.

Course was in alright condition. Pace of play was the worst I have ever experienced, Marshalls seemed to care more about harrassing you than doing their job. Staff was incredibly rude, and seemed to never have heard of customer service. Saw the beverage cart once the entire round, on a hot weekend day! Course is completely overrated-not worth the time, headache, money.

This course started out the year in exceptional shape. Tees and greens are still in great shape. However, the fairways have turned into grassless expanses of dirt and mud. Sandtraps haven't been maintained, so all the sand is a year old and hard as a rock when dry. Management has decided to put money into paving cartpaths. Pace of play is only an issue on the weekends, when it's a 5+ hour round. You can come out anytime during the week and get in 18 in under 3 hours, as no one is out here.

Compared to other public courses in the area, the fairways, tees and greens are in better shape than most right now. This is a more challenging course in a unique and beautiful setting. Hats off to the maintenance and upkeep. It's worth the little extra drive for a fun day and change of pace. First time players will benefit from a yardage book. The terrain is gently rolling in some places and a surprise can lurk behind a knoll.

I have played a lot of courses in the area and this compares favorably. It is quite unique, situated between the Shenandoah River and mountains. While the shape is not always perfect, it does not detract from the beautiful setting, good layout and the river flowing next to half of the holes. I would go a little more for the aesthetics than a championship course, however, the layout is still good. I think the two people giving it two stars are not being fair at all. We had a great day.

Neil must have gotten stuck behind some slow hackers. Va Nat'l is a premium golf track that really challenges your game, especially on the back nine. Best scenic course that I have played in the area. A great place to entertain an out of town guest. For the views, tranquility and pleasant atmosphere of Virginia National it's far worth the experience.

Based on the Amigos feedback (4.95), a buddy and I went to play VA national. Was thoroughly disappointed with the course. Quirkily designed holes, subpar conditions and poor speed of play on weekends. I will not be going back!

Simpley a beautiful course and in a a beautiful setting. Some tighter holes on the back nine with uphill and down hill carries. The clubhouse is nice with a decent 19th hole. The staff was friendly and the homemade burgers at the turn can't be beat. Just a great round overall, only drawback is that it is a bit of drive but straight out Route 7.

A 20 min wait for food at the turn (we just bagged it & kept playing), ripped-up tee boxes, and crabby marshalls made for a less than special day at what I believe is the "area's" most over-rated course. Save yourself the time and gas, there's plenty of better courses much closer.

Some one of a kind holes. Great all around. Needs some work around the bunkers and the greens. GREAT VIEWS on all the holes thats the best feature of the course it's a MUST play. Distance is not bad at all it only took me about 35-40 minutes to get there and back.
