Laurel Hill remains the beast to beat among public courses in the area. The only complaint I'd heard previously was the bad attitude of the staff and the cart-path only policy, but both problems seem to have been cured. What remains is a long, demanding test up and down hills and across forced carries. Pace was surprising brisk on the weekend. Nice greens. Good luck on 3 and 9.

Played the course on May 2nd. The greens were perfect, they held and were quick. The fairways were a 1/2 inch too long for Laurel Hill standards but were well groomed and full. The tee boxes were pristine along with the pace. The only downfall for this course is the hired help and their swagger.

This is a great layout and a fun course to play, if you can get on. It appears that all the other early times are not available to the public, despite this being a municipal course. Pace of play early was good. The greens were a little bit chewed up but very playable. Only major complaint was the sand. We haven't had that much rain, but the traps looked like they'd been flooded and were generally unplayable. At this price, that's unacceptable.

Laurel Hill is by far the best overall public course in Northern Virginia. From the moment I walked in the door to the beer at the bar after wards. The young man in the proshop was extremely helpful in getting my friend out with me who I had not booked a time for. I would seriously consider joining as a member after the great customer service I received from just the proshop alone. Laurel Hill isn't just a eagle, its a hole in one!

I love this course. Excellent design, layout & conditions. Plus the story of the prison makes it a unique experience. The rating would be higher if it weren't for the staff. I have played courses all over the country, wait, world, and have never been treated the way I am when I play here. I can see from some other reviews that I am not the only one that has had this issue. I brought a client there for a round and spent more time apologizing for the snot nosed staff than enjoying the round.

The rudest snootiest staff in the region and its a muni! Just because the course is nice, that's no excuse for the staff to be jerks and it's County owned. Plus all the best tee times are reserved for "members only". If you don't play early, you'd better have 6 hours to set aside, it plays slow. I'll not play this course again, for $89 I'd rather play Old Hickory or Cannon Ridge and there at least the staff wants you to play the course. Fairfax County needs to make changes, soon!

This course is in excellent shape and simply awesome to play. Everything is clicking here, greens, fairways, staff, and cart staff. The course is challenging, but fair. It has several memorable holes that will provide plenty of discussion at the 19th hole.

Teed off in the 3rd group off on Tuesday. Staff was excellent and accommodating. Played from the blues which is a great test of golf, lots of different strategies you can play out here. Even though the greens on the front 9 had the small aeration holes it didn't affect the roll. They appeared to be watering the hell out of the course so there were a few damp spots but this is an excellent course and I look forward to coming back.

Laurel Hill is in mint condition and it's August! This course plays deep from the blues and challenges every part of your game. The staff was helpful to go out of their way and 34 dollars for weekday twilight is insane.

Terrific layout with well kept fairways, scruffy rough and large undulating true greens. The tee boxes offer different approaches and distances for all abilities. The fairways are wide and only wild shots find trouble. Green fee is worth the course design. If you enjoy a five hour round, you will enjoy this course. Bring a Soduko or crossword book, particularly for wait on the Par 3s.

Played the course last Wednesday and it was absolutely phenomenal and the greens are lighting quick. The best shape I've ever seen the course in. A must play.

Excellent layout with a nice variety of holes. Fairways, greens, and rough were in top shape. Tees were not in great shape, but this did not detract in a meaningful way. A few bunkers look like they had not been raked in about a week. The course caters to the better player as it plays long with high grass around the landing areas and greens of many holes. Somewhat overpriced at $89 in peak time, but worth a trip if you want a test.

Played here Wednesday and it was in tip-top condition. Greens were great, quick and true; fairways firm, full and fast and the rough was minimal and fair, except for "environmental areas" which is just tall gnarly weeds/grass bordering a lot of holes. Sometimes a bit too close making not terribly bad shots un-findable especially number 3, that mess between the right fairway bunkers and the cart path is unnecessary.

Course was in the best shape with firm full fairways. The rough was great and the sand even better. The greens were out of this world!

I won't be back. If by "upscale" they mean rude staff and poor service then I agree. The cart path rule may be necessary? but for $89 they should at least provide a yardage book. Walking 100 yds with most of my clubs before I can even see my lie became tiresome at about the 3rd hole. They would not take my AMEX so...business outings?!? There is a lack of sufficient yardage markings. On the Marshals...by all means address issues but don't be nasty about it. Nice course in an area that needs one, but never again!

Course is in great shape. Greens are firm and fast. Everything is great about this course except for the ignorant grounds crew. Three idiots wouldn't clear the green when we came up on the par 3 16th. We sat for ten minutes while they just sat there joking around. One even proceeded to drop a ball in the bunker and hit sand shots! Then they went to the fairway on the next hole and sat there again. Our tax dollars are going to these idiots who just laze around instead of working? Upscale rates should equal better service! Get rid of the ignorant grounds staff and the course would be rank as one of the best.

$89 for weeds in the bunkers and cart path only. What a joke. Good fairways. Great greens. Terrible everything else especially the rough. Who wants to take 3 clubs to your ball 100 yards away every time? My favorite part is the "upscale" nonsense they've pulled on everyone. What exactly is upscale by getting exactly 25 range balls to warm up with?I've heard that cart path only will continue through next year. I won't be back until its done. You can't even remotely consider walking either.

The new clubhouse is open and gorgeous, place reeks of upscale golf layout instead of muni. Amazing, it is still cart path only, and frankly if that is what it takes to keep course in this shape I have no problem keeping that rule indefinitely! Great variety of long holes and hazards.

A great layout and a challenge. Although not as much of a challenge as some of the other courses I play that have lots forced carrys over water. I like the types and variety this course presents. There are some interesting left over structures from the prison including a farm silo Next to the first hole. The course is wide and a decent tee shot will not be punished by going into the woods as it is nice and open. Easily the best course I've played in the area.

Very nice layout. Can't wait for it to grow in and the cart path only rule is lifted. Still no yardage book after a year and a half though.

Course has a nice championship feel the staff does not. I played early morning and two mowers went right over my ball. One even stopped to pick it up and put it in his pocket. Starters had no clue; yet they were friendly. The greens are rock solid which is normal for new courses. With a new staff and membership only players this could be great.

The course is great. It's a challenge for all skill levels. The greens were great and rolled true. The staff needs much improvement. On the day I played, I asked did they have a tournament. I was told no, but they actually did and the course was backed up. Several walkons were waiting and the starter was sending out threesomes, twosomes and even a single. It seems to me, if you have people waiting, you fill out the foursome.

All the hype about this course is true. One of the best and most beautiful courses in the area. I can't believe this is a county public course. I had one big issue; since the course is brand new, cart path only allowed (which I agree with). However, for management and marshall to expect a group to finish a round on a busy weekend in 4.5 hrs is crazy. Definitely need have a yardage book, lost many balls not anticipating the many ravines and out of bounds area near the green.

Course is generally in good shape. Other reviewers are right, this is a rather long course. I thought it to be a fair layout, though it sure would be helpful to have a yardage book and/or hole-by-hole guides on the scorecard that show the ravines/creeks a bit better. My only complaints here: no course marshalls to keep things moving; we were kicked off the course after the 17th, even though there was plenty of light remaining (to shut down the course, I assume); and it does seem that a good amount of the clientele here is a bit rude. I may return, but my girlfriend refuses to. The group ahead of us was extraordinarily inconsiderate.

Very challenging. Almost no easy holes; chances at big numbers abound. Good condition. Cart path only rule understandable for new course, but paths are well off fairways/greens on many holes. Difficulty leads to at least one member of each foursome looking for a ball on many holes...so rounds are potentially long as well as pace/waiting. My only major problem is course is not well marked. Many times in a round you are not sure of yardage. I do not think they have a yardage book.

Only reason I didn't give it a five was many of the bunkers are still washed out from the recent deluge and the rough was a bit spotty, but the rest of it was excellent. Great greens & fairways. Nice tee boxes, not too beat up. Would like to play it again now that I know about the ravines that cannot be seen until you're looking for you ball in them.

Double Bogey

I played this course on a Sunday in early July. The course is long, ridiculously narrow, there are bunkers in every landing zone, and rough seems to swallow the ball. The greens are heavily guarded and were so hard that it was impossible to hold. The course was too punitive on minor misses and did not reward good shots. For $79 I would expect, at the very least, that the greens be in reasonable enough shape to hold well struck approach shots. There are far better deals in Fairfax County.

Although new, and suffering from some problems with water drainage, it is a very challenging and well laid-out course. We played from the blue tee, one off the longest and it was still over 6700-yds. Very long par fours, one of which would be a par 5 on most courses. Several of the par threes are very challenging at over 200-yds. Challenging undulating greens and a somewhat hilly terrain. You can walk it, but riding is highly encouraged. Cart path only on whole course, this year...Had fun.

While I don't think the PGA tour will make a stop here, this is a strong golf course for all 18 holes. Fairways were perfect especially for this time of year when courses feel the need for lush green fairways hence they oversaturate them; these fairways were firm and fast, which they need to be with the length of the course. Greens were recenlty punched and topped-dressed so give them a week or two and you'll see some great putting surfaces. Paths only and the $4.50 for a can for beer is steep.

Now my "home" course, I'm willing to bet the PGA will play there within the next decade. Visually stunning. Challenging, especially because of wind and elevation changes. Intelligently designed with more than one way to play every hole. The main needs: (1) a yardage booklet as cart path markers are inaccurate on several holes, (2) yardage markers on all the tee boxes, (3) finish the clubhouse already and (4) reclassify the 4th hole, virtually impossible to par off the tips, as a Par 5.

Awesome! I thought the layout was long and challenging, yet very fair. The variety of holes is better than all the courses in Northern Virginia. I have played several times and the conditions are top notch. Love the par 3's and the number 15 610-yd par 5. The closing stretch of holes 14-18 is as good as you'll play in the mid-Atlantic. Already breathtaking, but when the long grasses grow in, it will be unlike anything in this area. Kudos to Bill Love!

Course is in average shape -- grass is spotty, many areas like a construction zone. Greens were decent, good speed. But at this point, not worth a hefty $79 Municipal rate.

Fun and challenging layout. The course plays very long and with price going up it should turn some hackers away. The pace of play was very slow due to poor golf etiquette. Overall, see the course maturing in few years to be one of the top course in the area, if they force good pace of play and etiquette.

I don't know what the fuss is all about, I played it on 3/13/06 expecting great things. Design is mediocre, some nice holes near the end but the rest is forgetable. Greens were fast but bumpy, as with all muni's the hackers need to learn to fill or replace divots. The fairways looked like bombed out runways. I foresee 6 hour rounds on weekends if pace of play isn't enforced. For the price there are better places to play.

Thank you Fairfax County! Two words come to mind after playing Laurel Hill Golf Club - tough and distinctive. Course has an American links feel, but with a kick - elevation changes. Fairways are narrow, relative to the course's length, and are flanked by round-killing native grasses and VERY strategically placed bunkers. Greens are challenging - small, undulating, and fast but in great shape. Overall the course is great fun - it's well kept, well designed, and has a resort-like feel.

We played the course 1/20/06, for the first time, and both of us were very impressed. Tee boxes, fairways and the greens were fantastic. The clubhouse looks to be first class, when finished. They are booked solid, on Fri. thru Sun., for a good reason.

I was completely blown away by this course. I am a regular at Westfields and have had the pleasure of playing courses with initials as their names ie. RTJ, and nick names like "Blue Monster," so I consider myself lucky. This "muni" course, is certainly in the top 5 courses I have played in VA, DC, MD, heck, most of the east coast. The condition of the greens rival the best any private course has to offer and the layout is TOUGH from the tips. I coughed up the member fee by the 8th hole!!!!

Finally, an upscale golf course in eastern Fairfax County. It's about time! And it was worth the wait. The course is beautiful and challenging. Greens, bunkers, fairways, tee boxes, etc. are all in great condition. My favorite holes were par-3 #4, par-4 #7, par-4 #10, par-3 #11, par-3 #16, and par-5 #18. No two holes are alike; each has its own character. On holes 10-14, there are views of the old Lorton Prison. I was skeptical about building a golf course near an old prison, but after playing there yesterday, I can say it adds a "certain something" to those holes. It actually adds to the scenery to see the prison buildings and guard towers. Yeah, that may seem weird, but play the course, and you'll see what I mean. I would rate this course among others like Raspberry Falls, Worthington Manor, Westfields, and Cannon Ridge. It is an excellent course!

Laurel Hill Golf Club is probably one of the best layouts of any course in Northern Virginia. I can't wait to play it next summer when it matures a little and when it has a finished clubhouse. The course played fair and is in great shape.

Wow.. it pretty much says it all. The design, conditions and overall course is one of the best I've ever played. I can't believe Laurel Hill is a county course. It is a tough course especially with the whites at close to 6400 so bring your A game. Only drawback now is the construction still going on of the clubhouse that isn't open yet. Some of the rough needs to grow in and mature but should be a great place in the coming years.

Should improve. Lots of maturing needed. Better yardage markers are needed. Lots of blind shots. Great layout. Greens inconsistent. Very difficult and plays longer than its yardage. Many extremely uphill holes. After #2, nearly every hole could provide a big number. Par 3s are even difficult. Need to play it several times to know it well enough to score.

Played it from the white tees on opening day. The wind was 25 - 30 mph with gusts of 40 mph +. There are lots of elevation changes and the wind made it a very stern test. From the whites, the 3rd is straight up hill 423 yrd. par 4. There are still some kinks to be worked out, but overall a great design. Choose the right tees and it's sure to provide all the challenge you could want.
