While working at Clubgolf I’ve realized most all golfers want to hit the ball further. Some try to buy a longer game with the latest and greatest technology but eventually learn it’s not the key to greater length off the tee. If we could, all of us would like to hit it like Happy Gilmore or like the long hitters on tour. We might hit a long drive every now and again but few can do it with any regularity.
So what does Happy and the touring professionals do that you don’t? The answer is they know how to use the muscles of their lower body. The key to a faster swing is the ability to use your core muscles and the rotational abilities of the hips to generate speed through impact. I’ve worked with hundreds of amateurs and many touring professionals. All professionals use the lower body while most amateurs depend more on arm movement to swing the club.
One of the big things we look for at Clubgolf is the ability to start the downswing with the lower body (hips) and how fast the golfer can reach maximum speed. The professionals start with the lower body and reach that peak speed very quickly, while most amateurs who swing with there arms use very few of the big muscles in the lower body.
So let’s work on getting your lower body more involved in the swing with the pelvic punch drill. At the range address the ball and you want to shorten your back swing to just a quarter of the normal rotational length.

This is as far as your backswing should go. Once in this position you’ll hold the for a fraction of a second then swing. This is what impact should look like why you strike the ball.

Then finish your swing to a full finish just like your regular swing.

You’ll see that hitting the ball like this is very difficult if not impossible using just your arms. The pelvic punch drill forces you get your lower body involved creating the same motion Happy and the touring pros use in their swing.
