Worthington Manor Golf Club Review Date: 06/22/2002

Worthington Manor Golf Club  Three miles past the Montgomery county line in the foothills of the Sugarloaf mountain is the effortlessly rolling fairways of the Worthington Manor Golf Club.

Perfectly nestled in the Urbana countryside this 18-hole golf course with its quick undulating greens makes for a round of golf like no other in our area.

With its grand clubhouse immaculately conceived from the origins of the 1858 J.T. Worthington Manor, your arrival to the course is like taking a step back in time with visions of Bobby Jones, Gene Sarazen and Walter Hagen with hickory clubs in tow strolling off the 18th green. The feel and atmosphere that exudes from the clubhouse is carried throughout the course with wrought iron hole markers and lampposts.

Worthington Manor Golf ClubAmigos favorite Hole: The hole we liked best was the Par 3 161-yard number 17.

From the tee shot alone the intimidation of large hardwood trees that crouch the tee box is a great design quality.

Trouble lurks from every side and if you try to lay up and play short to the left the uphill approach and undulating quality of the green will make a longer putt very difficult to read.

Three tear drop bunkers line the front of the green, so if you end up short these bunkers are steep and make for a tough wedge for escape. On both sides of the green is a decline to brush hazards so there is really no safety net. You have to set up at tee and attempt a great iron. This hole can either help or hurt your score cause it is playable in just three shots and any wayward shot off course will and can "spell trouble".

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:

In terrific shape with enough staggering between whites to blues to change the courses feel from play at either level.

Fairways:
Beautiful in both feel and look. The rolling smooth feel of the fairways rank as high as any in the area and with the area being dry there was little to no visible signs of affect on the fairways. Kudos to the Greenskeeper!

Rough:
The rough has distinct varying degrees, with long grass and marsh areas that come into play throughout the course. It can and will affect your play if unable to hit the fairways. At least one club head up needed from this rough. You must remember to swing though the ball, the rough around the fairways will grab and hold onto the club.

Traps:
The traps are in fine shape and position. Bunkers on most holes are in place to affect a tee shot from any level. Around the greens the traps vary in both size and depth and definitely affects your course management.

Greens:
Good shape and fast, even though the dry weather is starting to effect some of the edges. These greens move in every direction and will without doubt keep the best of putters guessing.

Amenities:
Clubhouse perfection! The ambience and feel of an old country house is a very unique diversion from other cookie cutter clubhouses. The back brick patio deck that is adjacent to the grill is ideal for after round refreshments with style.

Staff Services:
From Bag drop to the end of our round every service member was courteous and extremely helpful.

Pace of Play:
Even on a very busy Saturday there was little wait between holes.

Overall Average: 4.5, Birdie Course
Nice Course, to play recommendation
