Woodloch Springs Golf Club
Sometimes
a course comes along that impacts your outlook on the game. It can
bring to the forefront a reminder of why you love to play golf. For
me this reminder was brought to my attention during the review of
the Woodloch Springs Golf
and Country Club.
With the Northern Pocono mountains of
Pennsylvania as the starting canvas, Woodloch delivers a subtle, yet
dramatic reminder that some courses are not only a part of the game
but also a piece of art within themselves.
The different styling of each hole is entirely
distinctive. Unlike most courses that carry a specific theme or a
certain style from hole to hole, Woodloch Springs embodies a course
that was designed to incorporate the surrounding natural beauty
within the land and to depict its own unique feel. From the rolling
hills of a Par 5 with two separate lading areas before your approach
to the green, to two side by side Par 3's blended a top a hill with long
views of the Pocono mountains, this course is entirely within a
class all its own.
Amigos favorite Hole:
This was
the toughest choice of favorite hole in a long time. In the end we
decided that the 558 yard Par 5 number 3 was our choice for
favorite.
One of, if not the
most difficult hole on the course, this hole requires a tee shot
that is best played with a 180 yard shot downhill to a wide fairway
landing area.
If your shot exceeds 190 yards it will be lost over
the hill into a thicket of outcropping shrubs.
The second shot is
classic risk/reward requiring a long and extremely accurate fairway
wood to the green. Guarding the straight shot into the green is a trio of well spaced
bunkers awaiting any wayward shot making for trouble with a capital
"T".
The smart play is to lay up and shoot for the ample lading area
just left of the green prior to your third approach
shot to
the green .
On
this day each Amigo played the hole perfectly taking the safe
approach with our third shot being our approach shot to the green. Both Amigos were
left with long putts on the undulating the two tiered green got the best of us
both but with finishing bogeys on this monster of a test of golf,
both Amigos felt confident and satisfied with only one shot over
par.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)
Tees:
Tiered spaced tee box's for all four levels of play. The championship tees on some holes are well behind the other levels making the course change in approach due to the through placement of the variable tees. Each box was in perfect shape.
Fairways:
Variety to the extreme, from large open fairways with easy approaches to tough tree lined fairways. The design is very unique that tests every bit of your course management skills. The par 5's are very unique with spaced fairway landing areas going both up and downhill. Meticulously maintained and in grade "A" shape.
Rough:
Thick and describable from the changing flows of the various fairway layouts. Tough around the green but in beautiful contrast within the other elements of the course.
Traps:
Well guarded green bunkers and large expansive fairway bunkers are in ample amount but no to the truly punishing extent. Well placed shots are rewarded.
Greens:
Like the fairways the variable different designs of the greens are a wonderful contrasting element. Some have soft subtle reads while others are multi-tiered. With frequent changes in pin placement this course could play different for years before being able to gauge a true sense of the reads.
Amenities:
A beautiful well appointed clubhouse. Included within the clubhouse is a full service bar and restaurant with a multitude of offerings to await all the golfers in need of beverage and sustenance. A small driving range is offered to warm up but plans for a large full service range are in the plans for next year.
Staff Services:
The entire staff at Woodloch is extremely service oriented. A special thanks goes to the starter who was able to obtain a band aid for one of the Amigos before his round.
Pace of Play:
There was little wait among groups but around the 16th hole there was a bit of a backup to finish the round. Due to the on setting sun we felt a bit rushed in finishing our round. You can't blame the course for the ending backup though it was due more to the golfing abilities of the groups ahead of us instead of the spacing among groups. And a special thanks to the Ranger who was out an about trying to speed the ending backup to completion.
Overall Average:
4.67, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
