Waverly Woods Golf Club

There are many varying opinions of what makes a quality course design. Most depends on the individual golfer and what they seek in a golf course.

But some of the most common characteristics found are: challenging yet fair layout, enjoyed by 20 plus handicapper and scratch golfer alike, a great piece of property with scenic views and the list goes on and on....

But for me the essence of any great layout is simple. As I walk off the 18th green, contemplating my round I tell myself, "I can't wait to play that course again".

It may seem over simplified to some, but it all comes down to the way a course makes me think. All quality designs make you think. You look back at your round and recall the memorable shots and not so memorable and the end result. Did your decisions result in an well executed plan or a poorly played hole?

You realize the course stimulated your passion for the game and it's never ending mystery of searching for perfection.

Well if you’re looking for a quality design near Baltimore Maryland then look no further than Waverly Woods Golf Club in Marritottsville Maryland.

Just off I-70 the course is conveniently located and offers a design you will not soon forget.

Varity is the spice of life and this must have been the motto of Arthur Hills when he designed Waverly Woods.

No hole on the course looks the same and each will demand the full attention of your game and course management skills.

Your attention to the task at hand starts on the first tee and doesn't end to the 18th green.

The variety of shot selection at the tee is abundant. Many of the holes have sloped fairways, so knowing how to pick a side of the fairway and take and aggressive line is key to setting up ideal shots to the greens. Playing strategically to specific landing areas will lead to easier approach shots and manageable putts.

More variety awaits you on the green ranging from large to small size; with relatively little slope to lots of undulation. The mounding and positioning of the greens is superb. Visually the green at times can seem closer or father away due to the sublet mounds and slight dips in the fairway leading up to the green, the course can either reward or punish based solely on the golfer’s ability to execute exact decisions.

But in the end the most "inherent quality" of Waverly Woods is its ability to project a true golf enthusiasts desire to play it again and again.

Amigos Favorite Hole: Waverly Woods has a few holes vying for our favorite, but in the end we settled on the par 5 554-yard number 8.

At the tee you're presented with what looks to be a wide open fairway sloping from left to right.

A large oak tree flanks the left side and looks to be a good target off the tee. But "beware", don't use the tree as a guiding target. The tree is much closer than it appears and if you hit a good shot it's possible your ball could run through the rough and into the woods.

In our case, we didn't reach the woods but were left with an intimidating second shot back across a water hazard to the fairway. Your lie will determine how much you want to gamble trying to get the ball close to the green. But with water on the left and woods on the right side of the fairway a conservative approach is advisable.

Your approach to the green should be routine with only one bunker guarding the front right side. If the pin is on the back of the green make sure to take an aggressive line. Any putt left short will have to crest a hill prior to reaching the back portion of the green, leaving a very tricky two putt to save par.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
There are five sets of tees ranging from 4,808 to 7,024-yards. The spacing among each tee set is ideal, allowing for a multitude of different ways to set up the course.

If you haven't played the course before It's a good idea to purchase a course guide before teeing it up. Some tee shots are visually intimidating causing minor doubt in target choice.

Fairways:
The bent grass greens were soft and receptive. The fairways actually looked more like manicured carpet than grass. Some of the best fairways we've seen all season.

Rough:
On the day of our review we learned first hand why they call the thick stuff "rough". The recent rains had kept the mowers from making there normal rounds leaving us to negotiate shots where the ball was just barely visible at times. In some cases it was just like taking a one stroke penalty. We were warned ahead of time though and a few mowers were seen on the course later in the day. Both greenside and rough along the fairways was thick and rich and given the recent dry times seen at other courses the superintendents staff at Waverly Woods should be commended on the outstanding condition.

Traps:
Even with the recent deluge of rain the traps were in very good shape. We noticed one trap with standing water but the rest were recently raked and had the perfect depth of sand both greenside and in the fairway.

The course has minimal bunkering but each is strategically placed. One of the most noticeable differences about Waverly Woods is that you see many few fairway bunkers at the tee. Each green has at least one bunker protecting the front, with a mixture of side and backside bunkers that are not always visible from your approach shot.

Greens:
Beautiful greens with a varying degree of both slope and size. Some greens were large and could demand a club "more" or "less" based hole location while others might be smaller. Each green has one standard hill, bump or swale to negotiate. Your ability to place shots on the correct part of the green and pin placement will dictate the difficulty of your putts or chips.

The conditions were perfect in every regard, approach shots landed soft but there were not many visible signs of divots and the ball rolled smooth and true at a medium to quick pace.

Amenities:
The clubhouse is unassuming from the outside but inside there's all the extras you would expect from a high-end course. The veranda overlooking the 18th green and 6,000 square foot putting green is ideal for any after round meal or post round beverage.

The range has grass tees and isn't far from the clubhouse behind the 10th hole. The remains of old 19th century corn crib guards the right side of the range and is the courses logo inspiration that pays homage to the lands original purpose.

There is a large putting green just behind the clubhouse and another small one just off the first tee; a very nice touch.

Staff Services:
The entire staff was friendly and attentive. The starter was nice enough to let us out a bit early at our request.

There wasn't beverage cart available during our round but we did see a marshal a couple of times making rounds on the course.

Pace of Play:
We had not issue with pace during our weekday round but would expect a weekend round at Waverly Woods might get a bit slow. A demadning design can sometimes have this effect on us who still have to pay for greens fees.

Overall Average: 4.6, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
