Virginia National Golf Club
When you make the
turn off of Route 7 to the Virginia National Golf Club
you feel as though your entering a national park instead of a golf course. The winding country road thick with
foliage immerses you into an atmosphere that embodies
the essence of "game meets nature".
Once on the course, the front nine slowly
introduces you into the feel of the course. Starting with a few
straight forward holes, the lush Virginia countryside blends
effortlessly from hole-to-hole.
Then as you make the turn and
think the views can get any better, the course turns from "great" to
"perfection". The back nine seamlessly envelopes the natural
surroundings as it meanders between the Shenandoah River and the
Blue Ridge Mountains. The enchanting weeping willows, century old sycamores and natural
waterfalls merge perfectly with the bent grass fairways
and meticulously maintained greens for a "great test of golf"
in a "divine setting".
Amigos
favorite Hole:
On a course that has at
least a dozen holes in contention for our favorite, we decided the
Par 3 15th hole was the most dramatic and unique hole on the course.
With elevated tees perched on
the side of a mountain, the tee shot is to a small green below with
little room for error.
On the day of our visit the pin was
devilishly place in the extremely narrow
front of the green making for a very tough shot.
With two confident strokes
both Amigos were just short off the front of the green. Now on
any other hole this probably wouldn't be much of an issue, but on
this one there is nothing but a gnarly downhill lie that doesn't bode
well for a short chip to the front of the green.
With
both first chips missing one Amigo went well past the hole leaving a
lengthy putt to save Par. The other Amigo seeing the slope that sent
the previous ball way past the hole, tried to be to delicate and miss
hit his chip with very little progress.
But on his third chip and
attempt for Par, a flash of golf brilliance, or just plain luck, shined
upon our Amigo friend as his chip hit the green rolled toward the cup and
in for an off the green saving Par.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)
Tees:
Four sets of tees are exceptionally maintained for every level of playing ability. The only negative found anywhere on the course was that the tee areas were a bit hard. This made teeing the ball just a bit troublesome.
Fairways:
Exquisite in every facet. Great feel and a joy to hit iron shots from. Cut to a perfect height that is very receptive for both woods and irons.
Rough:
Two cuts of rough with a first cut that doesn't penalize. Good iron shots can still be had but long fairway woods might have issues. The second cut is penalizing as should be with big missed shots. Long heather grass on some holes gives a Scottish feel while the greenside rough was thick but receptive of chips.
Traps:
Each bunker had ample sand depth for rewarding good sand shots while fairway bunkers were positioned well but escapable with solid iron play.
Greens:
You will not find any better greens anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic area. These large expansive greens rolled perfectly true with great variety in undulation. No variation in speed and very receptive of good iron shots.
Amenities:
The expansive rustic log cabin clubhouse exudes the perfect feel for the warm inviting country setting of the area. Clubhouse has everything your golfing heart could desire and the bar and grill is adjacent for entertaining the foursome after your round.
Natural grass range flanks the number 1 fairway and a large putting green is close to the number 1 tee. A large pavilion with picnic area and barbeque is available for any size group or outing.
The "At the turn cafe" is set up at the pavilion with refreshments and delectable barbeque treats that is very convenient while keeping pace during your round. Not to mention the nice "young ladies" who keep the barbeque fires burning.
Staff Services:
With a hint of southern charm, the entire staff was friendly and courteous and extremely helpful with any and all requests.
Pace of Play:
There was little to no wait to hit anywhere on the course during our round. The Marshal was ever present and each group was perfectly placed. A record round was had at 4 hours and 15 minutes. Excellent work by the staff.
Overall Average:
4.9, Birdie Course
