The Woods Resort Mountain View Course

18th Green view at the Mountain View golf course  In the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia just beyond the Maryland and Virginia state line lie the rolling open fairways of the Mountain View golf course.

A true golfers oasis this course is carved from the rugged backwoods of West Virginia countryside. The picturesque hills that roll along the courses terrain levels to various plateaus that seem to extend beyond the horizon.

On a damp and dreary July Saturday with showers in the forecast golf was at a premium but the playability and surrounding environment of the Mountain View course made our day of golf well worth our efforts. Part of The Woods resort in Hedgesville West Virginia the Mountain View golf course is a golfers delight, with quick challenging greens and open fairways this course makes for a rewarding and delightful round.

fairway view at the Mountain View golf courseAmigos favorite Hole: The hole we liked best on our visit to the Mountain View Golf Course was the Number 9 135-yard Par 3.

This hole seems deceivingly easy but the huge drop in elevation from tee to green and water hazard at the bottom of a hill just short of the green makes it a possible score killer. Being able to keep your ball near to the pin off the tee shot is key on this hole; a huge ridge runs through the middle of the green probably making for lots of 3 putts.

On this tough par 3 one Amigo stayed dry and landed his tee shot just on the right front green, staying away from the water that runs high in on the left-hand side. But with the left top pin placement it made for a long difficult putt.

Once on the green the huge ridge was just too much of an obstacle to make par. Just short of cresting the ridge, the first putt rolled along the break and then back down the hill well short of the intended target. The second putt was just shy of saving par and this Amigo had to settle for bogey. The other Amigo was forced to take a double bogey due to a tee that went in the water.

Review Date: 07/12/2002

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
In good shape with staggering boxes to change feel from the different levels. Nicely maintained.

Fairways:
Well maintained and easy to hit from but due to the drought and local water restrictions at the time of our review the fairways were getting very dry.

Rough:
In good shape but dry. Rough is discernible from the fairway and dense in some areas. But the fairways are wide enough to stay clear if your fairly accurate with your irons and woods.

Traps:
In good shape. Nicely maintained and raked out. Could be neater around the edges though.

Greens:
Best aspect of the course. Deceivingly challenging, even though the breaks are very subtle, the speed is medium to fast and will keep you on your toes. In superb shape!

Amenities:
Great clubhouse and full service grill that overlooks the 18th green. The putting green and practice chipping area is a nice touch and great for those who need to warm up before a round or work on their game after or between rounds.

Staff Services:
The starter was very informative an affable. Everyone in the clubhouse was excellent just like the remainder of the staff at The Woods resort.

Pace of Play:
Even though our start was a bit slow the pace soon picked up after the 1st three holes with little wait in front and no push from behind.

Overall Average: 4.33, Birdie Course
Nice Course, to play recommendation
