The Golf Club at South River

What would you do if you had the land, money and unlimited resources to design your perfect golf course?

I'm sure we all have different styles we like best. My perfect course might be links style and you might prefer a classic east coast style with tree lined fairways.

But no matter how different our dream courses might be, there are a few indelible qualities any course would have to have for perfection consideration.

First, the course would have to be challenging providing an ample test of game to keep golfers coming back.  Second, the course would have to be unique, in sense of feel and playability. The course would keep the golfer interested and entertained on every hole requiring the golfer to think strategy at all times.Third, the course would have to be in first-rate condition. Every blade of grass would be cut to an exact length, each bunker filled with the optimal depth of sand and every green would be divot-free, rolling perfectly true.

WAKE UP.... You didn't win the lottery, and most of us can only dream about designing "our perfect golf course". But if you appreciate a challenging, unique, well conditioned, beautiful course, then we suggest playing the South River Golf Course in Edgewater, Maryland.

South River is a challenging layout. Not to scare away the high-handicapper, but you must be able to manage each shot and make decisive decisions.

The course is tight, leaving little room for error: the ability to put the ball in the fairway from the tee is paramount.

The "unique factor" is what makes South River a great play. On this true "thinking man's course", the golfer has a variety of choices on each hole, and every hole is different. Even each Par 3 has a wide mix of differences to challenge your game. If you prefer boring golf and only like to a use couple of different clubs in your bag during each round, then South River might not be your cup of tea.

The condition of a course is what most golfers would probably agree is the most important aspect of any course. We expect ideal course conditions and South River delivers. From tee to green the shape of every tee box, sand trap, fairway and green are top notch.

We have traveled the Mid-Atlantic far and wide and have been lucky enough to play some of the most beautiful courses anywhere, but few match the indelible mark of quality and ever present beauty of South River.

Amigos' Favorite Hole: On a course with many memorable holes we decided the 455-yard par 4number-11 was our favorite at South River. From the tee you can see ample fairway, but this beast of a hole has a couple of surprises waiting for you on your second shot.

This is the only hole on the course where length off the tee is crucial.  The best way to play the hole is to cut the left corner of the dogleg, leaving a mid-iron into a well protected green.

Any tee shot straight or right will leave you with a very long iron or fairway wood approach shot. Depending on your accuracy, it might be best to just lay up and use a wedge in an attempt at getting the ball close to the hole to save your par.

Review Date: 09/10/2005

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
South River offers an approachable length of tees for many skill levels. But on a shot-makers course, your choice of tee makes little difference. Most of the length separation is on the 5 par 3's.

Each tee box was nicely manicured with lots of room to move the tee sets around for variety.

Fairways:
Compared to other courses fairways in the area these were in perfect shape and showed no signs of the disease plaguing other courses currently.

The fairways play slow with limited roll. Make sure to keep an eye on your ball because even on a day without recent noticeable rain, we encountered a few plugged balls during our round. I think management sets the course up this way to keep roll to a minimum on a very narrow shot-makers track.

Rough:
The first cut of rough was in great shape and made a noticeable difference from the fairway. The second cut of rough and beyond was a bit dry and made for some hard lies if your shot strayed offline to much.

Traps:
The course is well bunkered both around the greens and on the fairways. Keeping the ball out of the greenside bunkers makes a huge difference in your ability to score.

Each bunker had an adequate amount of sand, making for good greenside escapes and unimpeded shots from the fairway bunkers.

Greens:
A tremendous collection of greens, each rolling solid and true. The putting speed was just right and not over bearing. There is a nice variety of slope from green to green providing a good test of your putting ability.

Be sure and pick up a course guide if it's your first time at South River. Placing the ball below the hole is crucial to posting a good number.

Amenities:
The large pro shop is well stocked with all the necessities you may need. There is a grill and lounge area suitable for after round drinks and a burger if needed for back nine energy.

The practice area is decent with a large chipping and putting green. The range is warm up only, and you're limited to hitting irons.

Staff Services:
The entire staff at South River lives up to the standard we have received at other Atlantic Golf managed courses. You are treated like a club member for the day by everyone.

The beverage cart made many trips around the course and offered a wide assortment of drinks and snack food. I recommend the Arnold Palmer iced tea.

Pace of Play:
Considering the difficulty of the course, pace was just over 4 1/2 hours and was perfect. We had minimal wait on the tee and weren't pushed by the group behind us. There was a ranger out and about minding pace, but he didn't have much work on this day.

Overall Average: 4.7, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
