The Gauntlet

If you look up the word "Gauntlet" in any dictionary the most applicable meaning of the word is; a severe trial; an ordeal. Apply this description to golf and no name is more fitting than that of the Gauntlet Golf Club in Fredericksburg Virginia.

With tight, but playable fairways to challenge even the most experienced golfer, this is a "shot maker's" course, pure and simple.  Most tee shots require accuracy over length and club selection off the tee is critical to meet the course's test.

Several blind tee shots, forced carries and strategically placed hazards are all trademarks of course designer and architect P.B. Dye, not to mention multi-tired greens that will keep your putter guessing.

But don't let our impression scare you away, we want you to visit the course, meets it's challenge and truly see where your game stands.

Amigos favorite Hole: The hole we liked best was the number 17, 339-yard par 4. The hole starts with a forced carry over a small hazard to a well protected yet generous fairway landing area. From the tee, your best option is to hit a 4 iron or 5 wood depending on personal preference and more importantly accurate club.

If you're able to place the ball in the middle left portion of the fairway you'll have a short iron shot or pitching wedge up to an elevated narrow green that is well guarded.

On this day, 2 of the 3 Amigos got off to good start with tee shots landing nicely in the fairway.

But on the approach shots one Amigo went right side bunker while the other ended up short of the green, leaving a testy chip shot for an attempt at par.

The narrow green got the best of both short games and the final outcome was 1 bogey, 1 double bogey and one triple bogey.  Needless to say another round at the Gauntlet is in our future in hopes to pass this outstanding test of game.

Review Date: 07/26/2003

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
Tee boxes were in good shape. Some bumps and unevenness, but nothing that would surprise you. Players seemed to fill in most of their divots with sand and the variable staggering of the tees helps with the wear.

Fairways:
Fairways were a nice Zoysia surface. The ball sat up nicely if you put it in the short stuff. This is good for people who sweep the ball off the turf, not as good for those who have a steep angle of attack. That is the nature of Zoysia, good stuff.

Rough:
Rough was penalizing as it should be and was very consistent throughout. Discernible change from the fairway and thick around the greens.

Traps:
The sand was soft and very playable. Pay attention to green slope in the green side bunkers. Like many P.B. Dye courses, if you're to heavy out of the sand it could cost you more strokes due to the ball running.

Greens:
Even though the greens were running a bit slow they were smooth and consistent -- which is really what matters. They were generous to hit into making your approach shots very manageable.

Amenities:
Large expansive chipping and putting green is right between the first and 10th tees behind the clubhouse. Full driving range is available for your warm up.

The clubhouse is well laid out with a full service grill and bar is available for 19th hole activities. A large deck encompasses the back of the clubhouse overlooking the 18th green and 10th tee.

Staff Services:
The entire staff was very nice and pleasant. We should also mention that part of our group got caught up in traffic on our way to the course and the starter made every attempt to fit us in as soon as possible.

Pace of Play:
Pace was good. Play moved along rather quickly ahead of us. We were slowed occasionally by poor course management on our part (ie. hitting into hazards), but with GPS on the carts we were able to select clubs quickly and know our pace of play immediately.

Overall Average: 4.63, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
