Rum Pointe Seaside Golf Links

A short drive from Ocean City gives way to the beautiful and serene offerings of the Rum Point Seaside Golf Links, an 18 hole championship quality golf course located in Berlin, Maryland.

Designed by P.B. and Pete Dye, Rum Pointe opened in 1997 and is the only Ocean City course to offer bent-grass from tee to green. Nestled at the lands end overlooking Sinepuxent Bay and Assateague Island, the course provides views of the bay on no fewer than 17 holes with several holes fronting the bay.

Built largely on flat ground, Rum Pointe is best described as a hybrid design. An open links layout with lush parkland conditions. This unique feel provides an ideal environment for the perfect round of golf.

Like all great designs, good shots are rewarded and errant shots are punished. Your ability to get the ball to the greens in regulation depends upon your accuracy off the tee to hit fairways. Even though the first cut of rough is manageable, the second cut can and will punish.

Water in the form of ponds comes into play on sixteen holes. Both the front and back nine weave inland then back to the bay on the finishing holes. Both the 9th and 18th holes mirror the same lake guarding the left and right side of each fairway respectively.

Good course management skills are required as well as an ability to hit consistent shots due to the ever preset wind coming off the bay.

The wind can make a long par 5 reachable in two or make a Par 4 difficult to reach in two. Rum Pointe gives ample opportunity to score yet at the same time demands your respect and ability to settle for par.

Incorporated throughout the course are sod mounds and sand bunkers. These greatly enhance the scenic marshland feel. It seems each water hazard has an accompanying bunker or group of bunkers guarding the opposite side of the fairway or green.

Even though some bail-out areas exist there are many contrasting design elements to keep the golfer thinking. Negotiating the constraints and allowable limits of the course is a constant test.

Golf in Ocean City doesn't get any better than the perfect blend of natural beauty and challenge abound at Rum Pointe!

Click for Large Image!Amigos Favorite Hole: More than half of the holes at Rum Pointe could easily be considered our favorite. But when considering all of the factors that make up ‘a favorite’; challenge, playability, risk-reward, beauty, surroundings, etc, our favorite is the long 540-yard par 5 No. 8.

This slight dogleg offers beautiful views of Assawoman Bay and requires three quality shots to reach the green.

Depending on the wind, the hole is not normally reachable in two. With the bay on the left and a couple of bunkers down the right side of the fairway most will likely elect to play the hole with a three shot approach. The green is guarded by a bunker on the left front with Dye design calling card rail road ties lining the front slope.

Depending on pin placement a good wedge shot to the green will yield a run at birdie. But even a two putt ending resulting in a par is a good score on this hole.

Review Date: 05/06/2007

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
The bent grass tees are nicely spaced and in excellent condition. The four sets offer a variety of length for all skill levels.

Some angles from the middle tees are more generous than those from the forward tees so choosing the tees that fit your game is not overwhelming.

Fairways:
The fairways are open and inviting, perfect for confident drives. Simply beautiful to look at and outstanding to hit from. There is nothing better than meticulously maintained bent grass fairways from which to strike a good iron shot.

All the fairways have a gentle roll. Just a few have slope that can affect your lie. There is no excuse but your own swing for not striking a good approach shot.

Rough:
An errant shot into the rough at Rum Pointe can be very punishing. The second cut is lush, thick and demanding. Don't expect any spin from the second cut and make sure you make an aggressive swing. The dense grass can and will effect direction due to the grabbing nature of the grass.

Traps:
The course is well proportioned with both sod and white sand bunkers. They are positioned at strategic positoins throughout the course requiring decisive course management skills on both tee shots and shots to the green.

All the traps were in excellent condition and had the perfect amount of sand.

Greens:
The bent grass greens are large in size with multiple tiers and subtle undulation. All were in excellent condition with hardly any visible ball marks.

Depending on your accuracy with approach shots there is plenty of opportunity to three putt if you don't properly handle the slope and pace.

Amenities:
The clubhouse is cozy and offers an ample supply of golf clubs and golf apparel. There is a bar and restaurant adjacent to the clubhouse offering standard grill fare. The area is a bit cramped but there are a few outside tables overlooking the 9th and 18th greens.

The grass range is very nice, offering an excellent venue for warming up prior to your round. The practice green is located just outside the clubhouse and is maintained in course speed and condition.

Staff Services:
The entire staff was extremely friendly and accommodating during our visit. Because of very high winds golf was nearly unplayable the day of our review, so we decided to come back the following day to complete the review. The staff was very nice and made room for our twosome the following afternoon, even while hosting a planned outing.

Pace of Play:
We didn't have any pace issues with our afternoon front nine nor during the back nine the following day. The course is laid out generously and you feel like your group is the only one on the course on most holes.

Overall Average: 4.7, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
