Rock Harbor Golf Course
Back
in 1996 Mr. Denny Perry, President of Stuart M. Perry Inc. a
limestone and asphalt paving company in Frederick County Virginia
envisioned molding a thick stretch of rocky Orchard land into a
country club quality golf course.
After many years and over one million yards of dirt hauled to create
the scenic elevation changes, Mr. Perry has not only realized his
vision but has given the golfing masses a "haven" of
golf at an "affordable price".
With the scenic
Shenandoah Valley as a starting canvas, the Rock Harbor Golf
Course has firmly made its mark as one of the crown jewels
of courses in the area. Tons of rock blasted from the original track
of land is now used throughout the layout as a design aesthetic
adding both a defining character and unique distinction separating
Rock Harbor from its peers.
Amigos
favorite Hole:
Rock Harbor has a few holes that deserve favorite status but we
decided the nasty number 12, 692-yard par 5 gets our vote.
From the elevated tee you only have to survey the fairway below to
know you better have your top game in bag to par this hole.
Most would think the length alone would be enough for a good test,
but with water in play all along the left and a steep hill guarding
the right, any wayward shot could mean trouble in a hurry.
You
have to approach the hole as a definite 3 shot hole. Managing the
tricky fairway is key to keeping your score in check. The fairway
slopes slightly from right to left so take our advice and try to
keep your second fairway shot well to the right.
If your
safe to the fairway landing area after two shots keep in mind the
slight slope that can come into play prior to your wedge shot into
the green.
The
large green across a small quarry pond could be a difficult shot
depending on pin placement. The well-positioned bunkers will keep
most from going directly at the pin.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)
Tees:
With six sets of tees Rock Harbor has gone out of its way to make the course approachable and friendly for every skill level. With over 7000 yards from the tips and 4000 yards for the beginners, the varying tees are adequately spaced leaving plenty of room for staggered tee placement aiding with both maintenance and playing appeal.
Fairways:
The beautiful manicured fairways meander throughout and around an apple orchard that still exists from the original property. With elevations changes of up to 150 feet the fairways were in great shape for a course that is only a year old. Once grown in and with a thicker cut of rough it will be a great challenge for even the best golfer in your foursome.
Rough:
The rough hasn't had a chance to fully grown in so there was only one noticeable cut of difference from the fairway. It made the course very escapable friendly for those of us with a rusty swing so early in the season.
Even though this isn't the actual rough, we have to mention that during a few stretch of holes there is a huge eyesore of a junk yard that is a bit of distraction. Hopefully the second 18 planned for Rock Harbor will replace this thorn.
Traps:
Outstanding variation of placement that was in first grade condition. Even though our review was early in the season, each bunker was adequately filled with fluffy white sand making each sand shot approachable with confidence in your escape ability.
Greens:
A variety of feel and varying design qualities are inherent to the overall scheme of the greens. Wonderfully maintained with good speed that doesn't overwhelm your judgment. Mix in the variety of undulation and subtle breaks and you have a perfect mix of greens that will continually challenge with varying pin placement.
Amenities:
Spacious clubhouse with a sufficiently supplied pro shop. The grill and bar area is nicely appointed for any pre round protein or after round medicine to alleviate a bad round.
A full length driving range and short game chipping area is available for warming up prior to your round. We would recommend replacing the artificial turf used for the range and short game area with natural grass though.
Staff Services:
The entire staff was nice and obliging during our round. Cart attendants greet you when you make the bag drop and come out to take your cart back once your reach your car after the round.
Pace of Play:
Our round was slightly under the four and a half hour mark and nowhere did we have to wait for the group in front. The starter did a nice job of spacing the groups.
Overall Average:
4.7, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
