Queenstown Harbor River Course

In the Mid-Atlantic there is a plethora of golf courses in operation with an apparent "caste system" of style, design and overall experience.

Like all caste systems you have the working, middle and upper classes. Like a ruling monarchy the upper class stands alone setting an example for all other courses to follow. And if we had to crown a King of golf courses in the Mid-Atlantic near the top would be the essence of first-class golf known as the River Course of Atlantic Golf at Queenstown Harbor.

Nestled along the Chester River off the Chesapeake Bay the River Course is the perfect marriage of natural surroundings and quality design.  The numerous water hazards, hardwood trees and marshland carries provide both backdrop and obstacle as the course weaves its majestic voyage.

Like other great rulers, the River Course can be both fair and punishing at the same time. If you give the appropriate respect demanded by the course, through hitting given targets, then you should be able to navigate your way to a respectable score.  But if you try to overpower, cut corners and disrespect the River Course then punishment will ensue.

For instance, the 538-yard number 7 par 5 can either make or break your round. This tight three shot par 5 should be give ample respect. Trouble lurks in all directions from the tight tree lined fairway to the hazard running all along the front of the relatively small green.

But then holes like the relatively short 148-yard number 13 par 3 can present birdie opportunities. Based on pin placement you should be able to stick a good low iron or wedge for a birdie put.

The River Course is a "thinking mans" course. Through good course management it gives opportunity but at the same time challenges you to play your best golf. Over and over it presents choices. Choices can sometimes make or break your round; are you up for the Rivers challenge?

Amigos favorite Hole: The River Course is full of "signature holes". But the one we like best was the quintessential risk-reward 401-yard par 4 number-4

At the tee, you have a choice. Cut the corner over the lake with a bomb off the tee to the green or play smart with a fairway wood to ample fairway setting up a short wedge into the green.

If you want to take our advice play smart and take the fairway route. Even if you make it across the lake more than likely you will be left with a short chip to the green and still be putting for birdie.

Review Date: 09/18/2004

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
Each tee box was in exceptional condition and at over 7100 yards from the tips, the River Course will challenge the most accomplished golfer. Our only suggestion would be to add one additional set of tees that would be more manageable for the 15 to 20 handicapper. A true white set of tees at around 6200 would be a nice addition.

Fairways:
The fairways were in outstanding shape. You could slightly see dimples from a recent aeration but you would never know it from how receptive and plush the fairways were.

Rough:
One heavier cut along the fairways can and does penalize depending upon lie. A thicker and even tougher cut lies around the green and is a great test of the chipping game. Depending upon lie, both cuts of rough though are manageable and can be handled if you make the appropriate club selection

Traps:
With a number of traps both in the fairways and around the greens the course will and does penalize for wayward shots. Luckily the traps were in excellent condition with plenty of sand in green side bunkers for viable escape attempts. You will love the Par 3 number two with a plethora of bunkers to distract you at the tee.

Greens:
The greens were in superb condition and of a variety of both size and undulation to test your course management skills. The greens rolled at a medium to slightly above medium pass but not over bearing.

Amenities:
As you make your way to Queenstown you soon realize the drive was worth the trip. The well appointed clubhouse and 19th hole have all the extras to please even the most discriminating of golfers. The range has real target greens with complimentary balls for warming up. The expansive chipping and putting green behind the range is a good gauge of green speed before you tee off.

Staff Services:
The staff at Queenstown could give lessons on how customers should be treated. At the bag drop we were meet by a staff attendant who was extremely cordial and full of information for us first timers. The starter was filled with plenty of information, local knowledge and suggestions on how to play the course and everyone else in the pro shop and on the course we're the personification of first class treatment.

Pace of Play:
Even on a beautiful late summer Saturday, we hit the course as a lone twosome and had no issue with pace. We never caught up with the group in front of us and once we let one group by at the turn we had no one behind us the entire round. Completed in just over four hours.

Overall Average: 4.9, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
