Potomac Ridge

Just outside of Washington DC in suburban Waldorf Maryland resides the exceptional distinct style of the Potomac Ridge Golf Course.

This first-class venue comprises of three separate nines hole tracks owned and operated by Atlantic Golf. And like their other courses, Potomac Ridge "does not disappoint".

As you arrive at the course you're welcomed and introduced to the outstanding conditions, unparalleled service and a unique design of Potomac Ridge. It's evident that the management of Potomac Ridge has done an outstanding job at creating a quality golf experience.

The Meadows is the first of three nines and is reminiscent of classic east coast golf design. Hardwood trees guard all fairways and seem to increasingly narrow as you progress through the nine. Your ability to hit an accurate tee shot and keep the ball in the fairway will dictate the possibility of posting a respectable score or not.

As you make the turn at Potomac Ridge the Hollow nine reveals a pair of visually stunning back-to-back par 4s that share the same intimidating water hazard.

The number 1 par 4 requires a very testy and accurate iron shot to an elevated green guarded by a water hazard running the entire front of the green.

The number 2 par 4 tee starts with an elevated tee requiring a shot back across the same water hazard to a fairway that appears further away than is the reality.

The Ridge nine is the most recent addition to Potomac Ridge. It's a nice option for the golfer who might want to play an extra nine after 18 or for those limited on time and just have time for nine holes. But this nine is new so don't expect fully mature conditions. The rough needs to grow in and the fairways need to mature but with time the Ridge should be exceptional.

Amigos favorite Hole:  The 337-yard Number 2 Par 4 of the Hollow nine was our choice of favorite at Potomac Ridge.

The hole starts with a very intimidating tee shot over a water hazard to the fairway. For the right handed slicer, trouble lurks the entire length of the right side of the fairway with a well placed bunker and hardwood trees.

For the longer hitter the green is possible but not advisable. The hole is best played with a fairway wood to the fairway then a wedge to the green.

Depending upon pin placement this hole is well within birdie range but only if you stay out of trouble off the tee. If we have one piece of advice it is to realize that the green looks further away than it really is. The elevated tee creates a false sense of perspective on distance that if goes unrealized can lead to trouble.

Review Date: 10/16/2004

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
The variable spaced tee boxes make Potomac Ridge approachable for all golfing abilities. Each tee box was immaculately maintained and in grade "Eagle" condition.

Fairways:
The fairways were cut thin, which was conducive for added roll. When we were lucky enough to have a ball in the fairway there were no issue with conditions. Our only complaint was need for more yardage markers in the fairway. If your out beyond 150 yards there were very few makers available to accurately gauge distance.

Rough:
If your shots tend to stray, the rough at Potomac Ridge does and will penalize. A thick cut of rough is around all greens making for delicate chips; especially considering the very fast greens. The rough off the fairway is more manageable and doesn't penalize to much.

Traps:
Like all good courses the bunkering at Potomac Ridge is superb. You will find many bunkers guarding all greens. The fairway bunkers are strategically placed making you use course management skills to successfully navigate through the course.

Greens:
You have to have a soft touch at Potomac Ridge. The greens were fast and a great test of your putting game. Slope is a big factor especially on the Par 3s; make sure to check pin position and slope in the course book. It will definitely save you a couple of strokes.

Amenities:
The clubhouse is stocked with all necessities for your round. The driving range is available with free range balls and the practice putting and chipping greens are in course shape. They provide a good gauge for the quick greens that await you on the course. A large pavilion is near the clubhouse making the course ideal for outings of any size.

Staff Services:
Everyone on the Potomac Ridge staff was very welcoming and attentive to every need and request we had during the day.

Pace of Play:
On a windy day in mid October our round had every type of weather condition possible. We had wind, some rain, and at times sun. I think these conditions kept most other golfers away from the course so we had no issue with pace all day. We played the entire 27 holes in 6 hours.

Overall Average: 4.9, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
