Pohick Bay Golf Club
With
the youth movement on the PGA tour and the dominance of long ball
hitters becoming all too commonplace, it is nice to know that courses
like the Pohick Bay Golf Course still exist. A course
designed before the time of titanium drivers that are seamlessly
propelling the average drive distance further and further, Pohick
Bay demands your ability to direct each shots direction and distance
with necessary accuracy without distance being the most dominating
aspect of the game.
On
paper the course reaches less than 6500 yards from the tips and has
only a handful of sand traps throughout, but from the first tee box
its evidently clear that "length" is not your friend at Pohick Bay.
This hilly gem with very little rough on the fairways sides, blind
tee shots and some of the most densely tree lined fairways of any
course in the DC area gives you a round that demands the best from
your game and then some.
Amigos
favorite Hole:
The hole that stands out the most at Pohick Bay is the
multi-dimensional challenge of the Par-5 483-yard Number 13.
With a course that has a dog leg theme throughout, this hard dogleg
right requires a tee shot of only 225 yards to a rather narrow
landing area.
We would suggest during your round to ride up to the turn of this
hole and see the approach to the green prior to your tee shot if
possible. From the bend away from the tee shot landing area of the
fairway the hole drops off to and gives way to a medium sized lake
with accented water fountains.
Setting up the crucial second shot is a must because if unable to
clear the corner you’re forced to lay up to the landing area before
your approach to the green.
This miss hit will definitely cost you
a stroke because the bend leg of hole is so drastic. If you try and
fad your approach around the bend your most likely to go for a swim
in the encroaching lake. If you are able to make that pivotal “good”
tee shot your set up perfectly to reach the green in two with a
fairway wood or long iron.
On this beautiful Saturday all but one Amigo had a good tee shot
with a chance to reach the green in two. The one Amigo not so lucky
had to pitch to the landing area and go for the green on his third
stroke.
Both Amigos
with good tee shots went wide right on there second shot to the
green and the one Amigo that was penalized with the inadequate tee
shot was just off the right of green in three. With a good chip up
and onto the green the one Amigo that took three shots to the green
was able to save a Par with a good two putt while one of the three
that did approach the green in two came away with the only Birdie of
the day.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)
Tees:
In decent shape but some did not drain well from the rains the night before making for questionable footing at times. Well kept and in good shape otherwise on a course that sees allot of play.
Fairways:
The fairways were easy to hit from with a lush feel making for good strikes through the ball; especially surprising considering the dry summer in the Washington area.
Rough:
A bit dry but very challenging. With the dense tree lined fairways and thick grass at some points beyond the fairways and around the greens precision is key.
Traps:
In very good shape with fluffy white sand making for relatively easy escapes.
Greens:
The greens were in superb shape with subtle breaks that keep you on your toes; the most memorable aspect of the course . The speed is medium making for a readable speeds.
Amenities:
The full service clubhouse is adequately appointed. The range is outstanding with a covered area to wart off sun or rain and small sand chipping area of which you don't find at some courses.
Staff Services:
All the staff members were extremely courteous and helpful.
Pace of Play:
The starter got our group out 15 minutes early and there was no wait on any hole.
Overall Average:
4.4, Birdie Course
