Pleasant Valley Golf Club Review Date: 10/23/2004

The word "Pleasant" means to be in harmony with your taste or likings. Usually used as a descriptor the word can label many thing, but when used as part of a golf course name it is a bold proclamation indeed.

The word takes on a different meaning; it evokes a certain level of expectation. And any course confident enough to makes such a statement would have to deliver on all fronts.

Luckily for the Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Chantilly Virginia it does just that. The enticing mixture of both scenic setting and good design creates a delectable golf experience that is conveniently located and open to public play for all to enjoy.

Once on the course your "pleasant" round starts with the first nine holes exuding a classic east coast design. Hardwood trees protecting against aggressive drives while the thicker cut of rough will challenge your ability to get up and down.

At the turn the design of the course changes. The 10th hole establishes a links course feel that is carried throughout the back nine. The open fairways are very enticing to let your driver loose.

But don't try to get to aggressive. Awaiting most of your approach shots are well-guarded greens and a variety of different water hazards requiring you think your way around the course. The course presents many different scoring opportunities and at the same time does keep over aggressive players in check with an assortment of pitfalls awaiting any errant shot.

Amigos favorite Hole:  The 329-yard Number 9 Par 4 was our choice of favorite at the Pleasant Valley Golf club.  One of the most scenic holes on the course the hole starts with a forced carry over a hazard to one of the narrowest and intimidating fairways anywhere on the course.

The longer hitter could take a shot at driving the green but it is not advisable.

The green is well bunkered so the smart play is to hit a high iron or fairway wood to the fairway. From there you should be left with a good second wedge or low iron to a green that is moderate in slope.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
The tees were in good shape and nicely maintained. Only issue is the large jump in length from the white to blue tees. A middle set of tees at the 6200-yard mark would be a nice addition and would better suit the mid-handicapper.

Fairways:
Great fairways in both design and condition. The contours and feel of the fairways are very nice. Even with heavy rain the day before there was no visible sign of any standing water.

Rough:
One cut of thicker rough just off the fairway and around the greens. The rough is very fair and makes for ample opportunity to get up and down if you miss the green with approach shots.

Traps:
The course is well bunkered but not unfair. Pin position will dictate your ability to attack each pin; the greenside bunkers do a great job in protecting pin placement. Each trap we ended up in was well maintained with ample an amount of sand.

Greens:
The greens were very nice design and had ample slope to keep your putting in check. The conditions we're another story with some bumpy spots and you could never really get a good gauge or feel for the greens.

Amenities:
Nice cozy clubhouse with all the extra trimmings. The grill and lounge is very accommodating and makes for a nice 19th hole. The chipping and putting green is in course shape and a good gauge of the course greens. Driving range is available with free-range balls but the range mats and balls need to be replaced. Management assured us that both mats and balls were on order and should be in top condition for your visit to the course.

Staff Services:
Everyone on the Pleasant Valley staff was nice and accommodating during our visit. The starter was nice but didn't have much advice for us first timers at the course. The GPS on the cart is a nice touch and very helpful.

Pace of Play:
Our round went pretty smoothly on a busy beautiful fall day. There was some waiting between holes but not to the extent that it was a deterrent or issue to the round.

Overall Average: 4.1, Birdie Course
Good Course, worth a play

We would like to thank Mr. Michael Maloney General Manger of Pleasant Valley Golf Club for having us out for the course review.
