Penn National Founders Course

In an ideal example of traditional tree lined fairways with fairway bunkers placed in exact position to capture any wayward tee shot the Founders Course at Penn National is classic East Coast style golf.

The golfer who is accurate off the tee and can keep their second approach shot on the green will score well at this course that is designed perfectly for the amateur golfer. The founders course gives considerable leeway for the occasional slice or fade into the trees and most areas in the trees beyond the rough are playable and open for those in need to punch out for recovery.

The large round greens are in perfect shape with deceiving mild varying changes in depth. The ability to read subtle breaks is key to making putts at on these greens.  Your ability to gauge green speed will get you close and a few Pars but to keep birdies in the mix you must pay the utmost attention to the subtle changes these greens can and will throw at you.

Amigos favorite Hole: Our favorite hole at the Founders course was the Number 14 505-yard Par 5. This classic long dogleg can reward but only with an extremely precise tee shot.

A landing fairway area that is approximately 220 yards away is protected with trees to the right a bunker at the top and trees to the left. The perfect shot will be just in front of the trees on the right and will roll down in the middle of the fairway that doglegs back to the right.

On this beautiful Sunday both Amigos were in perfect shape from the tee and hit good second fairway woods that were just off the green. One Amigo chipped up and got lucky by hitting the pin and the ball fell just short of the hole. He tapped in for a gimmie birdie. The other Amigo had a great chip shot but missed his birdie putt and settled for a par. Like all rounds of golf, sometimes the golf god's "giveith" and sometimes they "taketh" away!

Review Date: 08/04/2002

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
Staggering levels make for lots of room to move the tees, which change the feel of the hole. Very little wear and in visible good shape.

Fairways:
A bit dry on the edges but that is more than expected for such a dry summer, otherwise it would be in excellent shape. The greenskepper should be commended for keeping them in such good shape considering the lack of rain.

Rough:
In fair shape but a bit dry. The management of the course is doing an excellent job with keeping carts out of the rough to minimize damage.

Traps:
In tremendous shape, both depth and positioning is ideal. The fairway bunkers are open for relatively easier escapes but also punishing at the same time.

Greens:
Large wide with many hidden subtle breaks. In excellent shape with medium to fast speed.

Amenities:
This clubhouse has all the extras along with a full service restaurant. Diving range is free of charge and included in your greens fees.

Staff Services:
The starter was very affable and the rest of the staff was extremely helpful. The facility is bring your own cooler so don't expect to see the beverage cart to much.

Pace of Play:
Perfect! We felt like there was no one else on the course. There was no wait at any hole during the entire round.

Overall Average: 4.26, Birdie Course
Good Course, worth a play
