P.B. Dye Golf Club

The best rounds of golf will test every facet of your game and one of the most prominent examples of a true golf test is the PB Dye Golf Club in Ijamsville MD.

When you arrive at PB Dye the beauty and design of the course profoundly displayed within the fairways and greens is worth the trip. With one of the closest views of Sugar Loaf Mountain, this course will not only capture your heart but will breathe the sheer essence of "golfing grandeur" into your soul.

The large open fairways are deceitfully tricky. Even though there is plenty of room for the wayward slice or pull, the thick rough that flanks the fairways will take its toll if visited to frequently. Course management is significant with the direction of your tee shot. Some blind tee shots will have you guessing but on some on the Par 4's the best advice is to aim for the radio tower for the best approach.

The G-2 bent grass greens will test every ounce of your putting resolve. These multi-level tiered greens with dips and hills aplenty require unwavering attention to pin placement.  Even though the speed of these greens can be taxing they are readable and fair.

Amigos favorite Hole: It was extremely difficult to pick just one but the hole we decided we liked best was the Par 4, 355-yard # 16. With the narrowest fairway on the course this par 4 can be conquered with a precise tee shot.

The best approach is to hit an easy 3 wood into the more ample part of the fairway at about 240 yards. If successful, you will end up right before the cart path crosses the fairway for a wedge shot to the green.

From the tee there is nothing but trouble all along the right of the fairway, pot bunkers and twisting waste bunkers run the entire length of the fairway.

The green is elevated with railroad ties and two bunkers protecting the front side. The only approach off the green is a small landing area just off the right side. But beware of playing safe this multi-level green will make your putter work extremely hard.

On this day both Amigos hit the perfect tee shots and were in ideal position to be putting for birdie, but the not so perfect wedge shots to the green got neither close enough to the pin for a reasonable chance.

In the end you knew this course was a standard set for all high end daily fee courses in the area.

Review Date: 06/30/2002

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
The staggering levels are spread so that overlap of damage to any tee box can be kept to a minimum. The distance between tees make every hole play different according to your tee choice. We played from the whites since it was our first time here but on some holes you have a better vantage point in seeing the entire hole from the farther tees.

Fairways:
These large and expansive fairways leave room for error on most tees with lots of uneven lies, the feel, texture and design is immaculate. Fairway artistry!

Rough:
The textbook image of what "rough" should be, a playable area of the course but to punish the wayward shot.

Traps:
Traps are plentiful but well placed. You would expect a course with 90 traps to be extremely difficult. These traps are placed to punish bad shots not to take away from good ones, which some courses do that have lots of bunkers.

Greens:
Amazing in both beauty and shape. The seamless transition from green to fringe is remarkable. With undulating levels, pin placement is ideal and will make the each hole play completely different once the location is changed.

Amenities:
The large clubhouse with full service bar has a veranda that overlooks the 9th and 18th greens with reflecting pool and waterfall. Inside the clubhouse there is a beautiful sunken dinner room that has a wall of windows that overlooks the veranda, 9th and 18th greens.

Staff Services:
Everyone at the PB Dye Golf Club was extremely helpful and nice. The starter was very informative and affable. The service bar was fast and courteous. The pro shop attendee was gracious and considerate. "A" plus staffing all around.

Pace of Play:
On a warm summer twilight round on Sunday evening there was no wait anywhere on the course. Either a great time to come or a great job by the starter.

Overall Average: 4.9, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
