Ocean City Golf & Yacht Club, Newport Bay

Aaaahhhh the eastern shore and no place better to start off our reviews of Ocean City golf than at the Ocean City Golf and Yacht Club Newport Bay course.

Across the Sinepuxent Bay in Berlin Maryland the Ocean City Golf and Yacht Club opened it's doors in 1959 boasting a scenic rural setting perfect for a premier golf club. Ever since golfers from the entire northeast and Mid-Atlantic have made it a must stop to play during their summer beach trips.

During our visit we quickly realized what keeps the masses coming back. The Newport course meanders through a beautiful setting of bay front and marshland intertwining both setting and unique design in a harmonious culmination of golf fulfillment.

Once on the course the front nine lures you into a relaxed state of mind with a couple of short par four's and a reachable in two par five. If you keep pin placement in mind and hit a few fairways the course gives ample opportunity for good scoring before you make the turn.

Once on the back nine, the encroaching marshland and water weaves a demanding test of game. As the level of difficulty rises and room for errant shots diminish, you can't help but appreciate the phenomenal views of the tranquil coastal setting the course adorns.

Amigos Favorite Hole: The hole we liked best at the Ocean City Golf and Yacht Club Newport Course was the number-12 520-yard Par 5.

This scenic gem starts with a marsh land carry to an generous fairway with water in play all along the right side.

Once in the clear and dry, your second shot is true risk reward over the water again to a well guarded green. For those with a more conservative approach to course management there is second shot lay-up area just short of the green.

Either way you decide to play number twelve or the rest of the back nine at the Newport Course we guarantee you will not be disappointed in both the quality of golf or the surrounding scenic landscape. We suggest you visit our friends at  www.oceancitygolf.com the next time you visit OC to book your round.

Review Date: 05/08/2004

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
Four sets of staggered tees make the course approachable for all playing levels. Only recommendation would be a longer championship set of tees. At only 6600 yards from the tips, longer hitters might need more room off the tee.

Fairways:
Nice in both texture and appearance, receptive to both irons and fairway woods and any divot damage was hardily noticeable, hats of to the superintendent and his maintenance staff.

Rough:
Two cuts of rough but a manageable first cut is not much difference from the fairway. The second cut could be a bit deeper depending upon your lie. Take our advice and hit the fairways, the approach shots on some of the back nine holes can be delicate.

Traps:
The well placed traps take each tee set in to consideration with proper placement. Each bunker was nicely maintained in both shape and appearance.

Greens:
The greens were in great shape. The subtle undulation and pin placement makes your green play a challenge but rewarding for good reads and pace. The speed was medium and the lines rolled true.

Amenities:
Large expansive clubhouse with room for large groups and outings. Full service range, chipping and putting greens are available for warming. A very nice facility indeed.

Staff Services:
The bag drop attendants were cordial and the starter did a great job fitting me in with another group because of a last minute cancellation. The 19th hole is a great gathering spot after your round and the locals are friendly and welcoming.

Pace of Play:
It was a Friday round so our judge of pace was probably skewed due to minimal play on the course. We had no issue with waiting or being pushed by the group in front or from behind.

Overall Average: 4.73, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
