Needwood Golf Course
Only a couple of miles from the Shady Grove Metro lies
the friendly wide open fairways of the Needwood Municipal Golf Course.
Nestled comfortably between various
suburban cul-de-sacs, this 18-hole course is very popular in Montgomery
County golfing community.
With reasonable rates and convenient
location, Needwood is attractive alternative to get your needed golfing fix.
Signature Hole:
The 18th hole is the signature
and is one of the longer par
4's on the course. Make sure you check the yardage prior to hitting your
second shot. If your tee shot is on the mark you should receive a good
downhill kick with only a short iron over the pond onto a large green
surrounded by bunkers on the dry side.
Amigos favorite Hole: The hole we liked the best was a
par 4, number 14. It starts with a tee shot off an
overlook bluff down to a tight fairway surrounded by brush on one
side and a slight hill and small trees on the other. At only 332
yards those who pull out the driver might want to rethink their
choice.
On this day both Amigos that were
lucky enough to hit decent drives and had decent wedge shots into the
green. But with a putting game that just wasn't up to Par both left
the green with disappointing bogeys.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)
Tees:
All tees were temporary with little thought was given to the temporary tee placement. Some were on slight slopes that could and did affect tee shots. Some were placed in wet and muddy areas.
Fairways:
The fairways are slightly above average, discernible difference between fairway and rough. Front nine is wide open and great for those with hooking and slicing problems and need the extra room.
Rough:
Just average and in some places not discernible from out of bounds. Not much variation and design is very average.
Traps:
Traps were moderately maintained. A few were hard and had not been ranked in a while.
Greens:
Slightly below average shape, challenging pin placement and a medium speed approach. Some greens had noticeable brown spots and goose poop was plentiful. I know golf courses can be a haven for wildlife, but at least try to keep the greens clear of goose dung.
Amenities:
The Clubhouse has second floor snack bar that overlooks both the number 1 tee and 18th green. The Pro Shop is moderately equipped.
Staff Services:
One of the grumpiest starters I've meet. I had flashbacks to boot camp. Everyone else on the staff was very affable.
Pace of Play:
There was little wait between groups from tee to green. On a very mild February day there were plenty of foursomes out.
Overall Average:
2.9, Bogey Course
