National Golf Club at Tantallon

Call me old fashioned but some of my most memorable rounds of golf are at classic courses. Sure, I can appreciate the new 8,000-yard courses where driver wedge is the standard approach of play, but if you're a true fan of design then there's nothing better that having to truly "think" your way around a course.

I like a course that makes you think your way around dog legs. I like playing holes that make you consider hitting something besides a driver at each Par- 4 and Par-5 tee and I definitely like a course that rewards accuracy over anything else. I know many golfers who can hit the ball 300-yards but only a couple who can do it with accuracy.

So, if you're like me and appreciate a classic tree lined design in perfect condition then it just doesn't get any better than a day, round or membership at National Golf Club at Tantallon in Fort Washington Maryland.

When we first teed off the most noticeable appreciable characteristic was the impeccable conditions. The bent grass fairways were like a carpet with only a few visible divots. The greens rolled so smooth and true that any ball rolled on a good line had no choice but going in the cup and the rough actually had three distinct cuts with no spottiness anywhere.

The course recently underwent a $3.5 million renovation project and the hard work defiantly shows.

The second appreciable characteristic was the course design. The course first opened in 1961 and Architect Ted Robinson did a great job with the rolling terrain.

The mature tree lined fairways are the main obstacles to avoid on the course and even though most fairways have adequate landing areas the many trees guarding each side definitely enter your mind before every shot.

The third most appreciable characteristic is the variety of holes. There are short, medium and long Par-3s and Par-4s; long three shot Par-5s and risk reward birdie Par-5s. You're constantly presented with considering the various ways to play each hole.

It's that perfect course to be a member at because it can play totally different if tees are placed forward or back, pin position changes or when the rough lengths change. One day you might pull out a driver on a Par-4 and the next day you might chose an iron for position.

The fourth most appreciable characteristic is the location. The course is located 15 minutes from Old Town Alexandria and only 11 miles from downtown Washington. We all know the woes of traffic in the DC metro area and the location of National Golf Club at Tantallon alone make it a great option for any corporate outings or event. Those looking for a private club at a reasonable price should definitely check out the Clubs membership options.

Amigos Favorite Hole: We just couldn't settle with one favorite hole at National Golf Club at Tantallon. That's why we chose the demanding 220-yard Par-3 15th and the 556-yard Par 5 16th as our favorite pair. These two back-to-back holes definitely put the "icing on the cake" for a round to remember.

The Par-3 15th has the most challenging tee shot anywhere on the course. The length alone will test the most highly skilled golfers and puts a premium on an accurate tee shot. Then if you consider the long narrow long two tiered green as a target, a par is great score on this hole. But what might creep in your mind the most at the tee is the dramatic dip in elevation from tee and then back-up to the green.

The only advice that might help is trust your swing, choose the right club and swing away!

If by chance you made a big number on the Par-3 15th, then the Par-5 16th offers a good chance to get a stroke or two back with a good drive. The elevated tee provides a memorable view and the slight dogleg left is accessible and reachable from the fairway.

These two back-to-back on the back nine definitely stuck in my mind after the round. With the overall personality of design and the varying ways to approach the course, you can see why National Golf Club at Tantallon is a "great place" to play the game but would be even a "better place" to be a member.

Review Date: 06/21/2008

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
The course is a Par 72 with four sets of tees. The championship tees max out at 6,824 yards which might seem short for long hitters but accuracy is the required skill necessary to navigate the tree lined fairways of National Golf Club at Tantallon; the classic design is a great test of skill.

The bent grass tees were in phenomenal condition. Like many classic courses some tees boxes are shared by two tee sets but the long length of the each tee box allows plenty of room to continually adjust tee location allowing for plenty of variety for its members.

Fairways:
The flawless bent grass fairways alone made me want to sign up for a membership. There were no visible signs of distress, spottiness or wear anywhere. All the fairways seemed like a bent grass carpet from tee to green.

The tree lined fairways are routed with many doglegs requiring you to think your way around the courses, especially off the tee where driver wedge is far from the norm. Position is not an after thought and trouble always lurks, any over aggressive play can mean trouble if you stray to far from the fairway.

Rough:
There are three distinct and graduated cuts of rough off the fairway. The first cut was just slightly thicker than the fairway and was easily negotiated. The second cut was about an inch thick where the ball does sit down. The third cut was thick and would twist the club head on descending blows making you pay for straying to far from the fairway. It's rare on public courses to see three distinct cuts of rough so it was a treat to play.

Each cut of rough had no spottiness anywhere. It was great for gauging how to play a lie, especially if you had a similar lie on a previous hole. The length of each cut was consistent throughout the course.

Traps:
Each trap was in very good shape with an exact amount of sand both green-side and in the fairway. The classic layout is more on side of minimal in the number of traps but all are strategically positioned both green-side and along the fairway.

Greens:
I've seen my share of greens during my lifetime and the greens at National Golf Club at Tantallon might be the best greens I've had the pleasure putt on in terms of condition. The speed was medium to quick and if you made a good putt then you had a great chance at making the putt.

The greens vary in size to some large with slight breaks to small narrow targets with two levels. These greens challenge your game but give you a fair test in allowing you to score well if you can consistently gauge slope and speed to the hole.

Kudos to Superintendent Todd Gribling and his staff. If you can maintain a course in such perfect condition, you know you have a great super!

Amenities:
A stately manor house is home to the clubs prshop, restaurant, locker-room and outing facilities. The decor is tasteful yet unassuming creating an ideal "home away from home" feel. The club has facilities and plenty of room to host private events and outings.

The range has grass tees and there is a large chipping and putting green just behind the range in course condition. If you like to practice and work on your game then practice facilities doesn’t get any better than those offered at National Golf Club at Tantallon.

I was extremely impressed with the notification of current green speed displayed just off the practice green. Each day the course has someone measure the current green speed with a stimpmeter. I could only imagine playing the course on a regular basis and by knowing the current speed you could easily adjust on the greens allowing you to roll more in!

Staff Services:
Everyone on the National Golf Club at Tantallon staff made us feel like current club members. From club drop to the marshal out tending pace, the staff was first rate in every manner.

Pace of Play:
One of the benefits of belonging to the club is pace of play. The spacing of tee times was a bit further apart between groups and even with many groups out walking the course our pace of play was just over 4 hours. We were even sent out as a twosome among foursomes and had hardly any wait on any tee.

Overall Average: 4.9, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation

We would like to thank Events Coordinator Mike Schulz and General Manager Brad Compton for having us out to visit and review National Golf Club at Tantallon.
