Meadows Farms Island Waterfall

Just across the Culpepper county line in Locust Grove Virginia is the secluded and daring play of the Meadows Farms golf course. Built in 1993 on picturesque rural farmland in Orange county, Meadows Farms features 27 holes of golf over three distinct 9-hole tracks.

In the early 1990's, Bill Meadows owner of Meadows Farms nurseries was disillusioned by the crowded course conditions, high fees, unfriendly attitudes and poor management, of courses he played in the area.

His answer was to build his own course on the beautiful gently rolling hills of his pure bred Santa Gertrudis Cattle Farm in Locust Grove, Virginia.

Today, Mr. Meadows vision lives on with a course that offers reasonable prices, a laid-back atmosphere and an enjoyable and unique round for every type of golfer. With holes that embody the whimsical to the longest hole in the United States, Meadows Farms is a plethora of differing design styles jumbled within the same course.

Amigos favorite Hole: The easy choice of favorite was the number 12, 841-yard par 6 on the Longest Nine course. Holding the Guinness' book of world record for longest golf hole in the United States, your game must include the ability to hit a good fairway wood to have any chance at par.

The colossal hole is a dog leg right with two water hazards strategically placed to test your course management. The first hazard is at the bottom of a small hill right at the corner of the dog leg.

Most golfers will be fine hitting a long drive off the tee because it's over 280 yards to reach the water. But make sure your tee shot stays left. If you tend to push your shot right you will be punished with a down hill lie in the rough for starting position of your second shot.

Your target for a second shot fairway wood doesn't get any easier. You have to keep the ball middle left of the fairway. If your second shot strays right, you will likely end up in the rough and at another angled lie. This lie for your third shot will likely force you to lay-up because the 2nd water hazard comes into play.

Only one Amigo was in good enough position for his second fairway wood, but was forced to lay up on his third shot. With a good iron shot he reached the green in 4 and able to two putt his way to par. This is one 6 on the scorecard "any golfer" can feel proud of!

Review Date: 05/24/2003

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
Variable tee placement for all levels of play. Nicely maintained with proper spacing. Be sure to buy a course guide your first time out to Meadows Farms, some tee shots are blind and needing to know exactly where to place your shot is important here.

Fairways:
The fairways were in great shape, large open in some places with a variable hilly lies on others.

Rough:
Some worn places can and will definitely effect your shot if you miss hit an approach. Hitting the fairways is essential to scoring well at Meadows Farms.

Traps:
Traps were ample and well placed both around the greens and in the fairways. Unique railroad tie designs throughout the course evoking a unique flair and style.

Greens:
Greens were average and rolling at a slower pace. The design on the greens were well done with some being very readable and approachable to others with lots of undulation. Depending on pin placement some greens will play very different on every trip to the course.

Amenities:
Everything available for the golfer. The pro shop has all the extras incase you forgot that sleeve of balls or golf glove. A full service bar and grill awaits you at the turn or relax on the nice patio to enjoy 19th hole refreshments overlooking parts of the course. Natural grass driving range and chipping and putting green available for warm-up or extra practice after your round.

Staff Services:
The entire staff was very attentive. The starter was very through and descriptive for us first timer's about the unique holes and how to approach play at the course.

Pace of Play:
Known to be a popular busy course there was minimal waiting between groups. The marshal was out and made a few rounds trying to keep the pace for everyone.

Overall Average: 4.2, Birdie Course
Good Course, worth a play
