Maryland National Golf Club Review Date: 05/24/2008

There are many generic superlatives to describe a great golf course; exceptional, challenging, beautiful, scenic and on and on. But the highest accolade any course can receive is its ability to stick in your mind after the round.

Its how certain holes and the way you played the course replay in your head over and over again. The course literally offers such a unique experience that you can't wait to make your next tee time. Well in my mind no course does this better than Arthur Hills designed Maryland National Golf Club in Middleton Maryland.

Maryland National Golf Club delivers more character on any one hole than you might see in 18-holes at your typical muni. It's the abundance of varying design characteristics that makes the course unique. The varying blend of elevation changes, mounds with sloping fairways and small quick greens presents a challenge you just don't see at most other tracks.

Calling the course a private club for a day might be an understatement. You receive the "royal treatment" at Maryland National with a well appointed clubhouse, locker room and one of the best practice facilities you'll find anywhere. The range provides a true example of the real elevation changes and targets you'll experience on the course. A large tavern and restaurant overlooks the course in the valley and the expansive size of the clubhouse makes it perfect for large groups and outings.

On the course diversity is abound and you'll need your "A" game to post a good score. The most important decision of the day is choosing the right set of tees to play for your game. The best advice I can give you is to look at the length of the Par 3s. Each Par 3 on the course has a forced carry, plays up hill or down hill to small greens.

Choose the tees that give you the most reasonable chance at getting on the green without struggling. This is the correct set of tees to play for your game. This is probably a good rule of thumb at any course, but at Maryland National the Par 3s are the most scenic yet challenging of any course in the Mid-Atlantic.

There are long Par5s, short Par 4s and then there’s the downhill 246-yard Par 3 12th. Fairways range from dual wide targets to small strategic shots like the 336-yard Par 4 16th. Each hole has it's own distinct feel and challenge where no two are even slightly similar.

From tee to green Maryland National requires you to think. Your ability to manage your game, take what the course gives you and capitalize when opportunity arises is what this course demands. Maryland National Golf Club is the ideal course to test your game.

So the next time you're striking the ball and just feel like your home course doesn't test you any more do yourself a favor and take your game to Maryland National and see where you really stand. Are you up for the challenge?

Amigos Favorite Hole: There are a plethora of holes to choose as favorite at Maryland National but the one still distinctly stuck in my mind is the 585-yard Par-5 No. 2.

For starters the hole drops more than 100-feet in elevation from tee to green and at the tee all you see is a ridge and fairway to the right an a couple of bunkers down the left side. This is one of a few semi-blind shots off the tee and if it's your first trip to Maryland National the safe play is usually the best choice in your plan of attack.

Depending on which tees you're playing, you might have a go at the green in two. But no matter how far you hit your drive you still have to contend with a large Red Elm tree sitting in the middle of the fairway 150-yards directly in line with the green. Unless you can work the ball from side to side, the prudent play is a lay-up either right or left of the green leaving a wedge in with your third shot.

The green is guarded will on the front by bunkers and there is no room to go long behind, so take our advice and play for Par. Getting greedy at Maryland National can add up quickly on the score card if you’re not careful!

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
This Par 71 course has five sets of tees ranging from 6,811 yards to 4,844. With lots of elevation changes moving back a tee set won't make a huge difference. The most noticeable difference will be on the Par 3s. The key to having a good day at Maryland National depends heavily on choosing the right set of tees to play.

The tees are spaced beautifully providing different views and varying obstacles for everyone. The conditions were perfect!

Fairways:
Once on the fairways of Maryland National you'll soon see that the over whelming theme is "variety". There are wide fairways and narrow fairways with mounding uphill, downhill and side hill. If there is a specific shot that you have an issue with you'll more than likely find it at Maryland National. The course continually tests you in every aspect of the game.

The conditions were in immaculate, just beautiful to see and play on.

I do have one issue with regards to the design. On a couple of holes the greens were hidden with a large mound in the middle of the fairway. I remember having two shots with less than 100-yards to the green and could barely see any of the green. I don't mind a blind shot, but if you're in the fairway and close to the green you deserve a good look.

Rough:
he rough wasn't very high during our round but the ball really settles creating some testy escapes. On most courses you can find some thin spots but at Maryland National the rough was perfect with bountiful for those who can't find the fairway.

There are plenty of hazards around the greens and the Par 3s are some of the toughest you'll find anywhere. Don’t over club or under club, anything not on the green makes getting up and down to save par near impossible. And if it's a windy day, good luck!

Traps:
The course isn't overly bunkered but positioned well both greenside and in the fairway. This makes for a good balance with the other obstacles on the course.

Each bunker we hit out of was in flawless condition. The sand was at perfect depth and the edging around the bunkers were aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Greens:
The greens are one of the most outstanding features of the course.

Overall these greens are smaller in size and in impecable condition. Rolling smooth quick and true the sublte delicate breaks made reading these greens difficult. It seemed as iff the the various contours off the green can and will play tricks on your mind seeing break that isn't there or in the other direction.

We were told by a local that everything breaks away from the mountian. It seems like a logical assumption and did help us on the back nine.

Amenities:
The immaculate 13,780 square foot clubhouse exudes the private club for a day feel and provides a wonderful atmosphere for post round drinks, tournament festivities or corporate outings. The large wrap around deck provides spectacular views of the course situated in the valley below.

All the extras are provided for your private club for the day. Free range balls and unlimited use of the practice facility and club cleaning after your round. The GPS on the carts is really nice tracking the group in front of you and telling you how far you drove the ball off the tee.

Staff Services:
The entire staff at Maryland National was more than hospitable going out of their way to make sure our rounds was a memorable one.

The starter was very detailed giving us advice on which tees to play and had plenty of general guidance on how to best play the course.

There was a beverage and snack cart making rounds offering beverages for re-hydration on others with “medicinal” qualities. Swing fluid always helps!

Pace of Play:
We had perfect weather over Memorial Day weekend and couldn't believe the tee sheet wasn't entirely full. We hardly saw a group in front of us and no one behind us. We played our round in just under 4.5 hours which is a good pace at this demanding course.

Overall Average: 4.8, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation

We would like to thank Sherree Lance Director of Sales & Food Service and General Manager Ethan Lester for having us out to visit and review Maryland NationalGolf Club.
