Links at Lighthouse Sound

Sometimes if your lucky a course can "mesmerize" you. A perfect combination of unbelievable views, natural beauty and design are brought together in unison of one. And the course worthy of such high regard is the Links at Lighthouse Sound.

Located in Bishopville Maryland the course is perched along the shore of the Assawoman Bay providing expansive views of the Ocean City skyline.

When you arrive at the course your first taken aback by the outstanding facilities. The expansive range offers lush fairway conditioned grass tees with target greens. The large chipping and putting greens are in course ready condition offering a taste of what the course has in store.

Once on the course your journey starts with a couple of holes introducing you to the demanding skill needed to meet the Links challenge. The hard fast greens and thick greenside rough put a premium on short game.

The front nine meanders along theBay with views of Ocean City as a backdrop. The star hole on this stretch of the course is the very demanding "Hills Passage".

Surrounded by water on three sides the 218-yard par three can play benign to unbearable depending on the speed and direction of the wind coming off the bay.

The back nine starts with a trip along the longest cart bridge in the United States, extending nearly 1,500 feet. This bridge will take you from the bay side holes across to the marsh side. Each hole blends perfectly with the surrounding environment creating an unmatched feeling of seclusion. One signature hole after another is slowly unveiled providing tighter fairways and pedestal greens with a premium on shot making accuracy.

In the end stories are told and journeys are destined to be experienced, and lucky for you the embodiment of such an experience exists and is open for public play at the Links at Lighthouse Sound.

Amigos favorite Hole: With eighteen "signature" holes to choose from our choice was very difficult. In the end we decided on the challenging 622-yard number 7 "Devils Elbow". Mix in a forced carry from the tee, tons of marshland in prime slice location and another carry over a hazard for your approach shot to the green and you soon realize where they came up with the name.

At the tee the ample fairway gives plenty of room to take your best shot for long drive of the day. Hopefully, and if daring, cutting the corner is an option and the green can be reached in two for long hitters.

But for those with a medium to short game the hole sets up nicely for a three shot approach with an ample landing area below the green.

In our case the devil can be tamed and with a strong wind at our backs he/she can even be conquered. The final outcome was three Pars and one Eagle, not to shabby if we say so ourselves.

Review Date: 05/09/2004

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
Five sets of perfectly maintained tee boxes offering varying length for levels of playing ability. The blacks set is over 7000 yards offering plenty of length and challenge for the better golfer. While the Gold, Blue and White offer a more manageable length for higher handicappers.

Fairways:
The shape and level of perfection and devotion to course maintenance is seen all over the fairways the course. Divots hardly seen and those that you do are sand filled. If only complaint about the course is that the fairways seemed a bit firm, hard to get your irons down and through the ball.

Rough:
Two cuts of rough await you with one cut slightly greater in length from the fairway and the second cut that is thick and grabbing. Around the greens you have to really pay attention to ball depth when making your chips.

Traps:
Well placed and in perfect shape. Generous portions of white fully sand around the green side bunkers and beautiful maintained fairway bunkers.

Greens:
Quick, fast and in meticulously manicured shape. The greens vary in size and undulation, staying below the cup is a necessity to have any chance.

Amenities:
Gorgeous Clubhouse with every amenity imaginable. Large expansive practice area including range with full size greens to hit to, huge chipping green with bunkers and course manicured putting green.

Adjacent to the pro shop is the Lighthouse Restaurant overlooking Assawoman Bay and the Ocean City skyline serving some of the best cuisine on the Eastern Shore.

Staff Services:
Everyone on the Lighthouse sound staff was extremely nice. The baggage attendants meet you at the bag drop and take good care of your clubs after the round. The starter was very informative.

Pace of Play:
Since our round was on Mothers Day there was no issue with pace. The outstanding layout with holes being off all by themselves made us feel like we had the course to ourselves.

Overall Average: 4.9, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
