Links at Challedon Review Date: 10/03/2007

Links at Challedon Par 3 No. 14Who doesn't like a good comeback story?

There are plenty of sports movies, books and general life lessons that involve the down and out team that never wins or the individual who has nothing but bad luck but finds a way to over come an insurmountable trail.

But as the story unfolds the underdog team wins and the individual beats the odds to triumph in the end.

We love these stories because we can identify with them. At some point in our lives we've been on that team...we've been that individual. The ability to overcome life’s lessons are a part of the human condition.

Well today’s comeback story is the resurgence of the Links at Challedon in Mt. Airy Maryland.

A few years ago the course fell on hard times and was bounced from one management company to the next trying to squeeze every penny out of the operation without much consideration for the course or the golfers who enjoy playing there.

Links at Challedon Par 5 No. 17After a few of years of a steady downward decline Pure Golf a subsidiary of Troon Golf took over management operations last year and have done a tremendous job resurrecting the course.

The course resides in a housing development and is a crossbreed between a links and parkland style course. With open fairways and quick greens the course is neither overly difficult or a straightforward municipal.

Golfers of any skill level will enjoy a round at the Links at Challedon.

With the many improvements made by management the most impressive is the many areas that have been cleared making the course more player friendly.

For the seasoned golfer the course design is a step up from your typical municipal. With a few blind shots and plenty of risk reward holes you have to stay on your game at all times. If you don’t give the course the appropriate respect and use good course management skills it can and will punish just as quick as it rewards.

All in all the great conditions from tee to green and improved overall experience make the Links at Challedon worthy of a visit if you haven't played it before or haven't played it in a while. Like most comebacks in life it's time to reward a course deserving of our patronage again.

Links at Challedon Par 4 No. 4Amigos Favorite Hole: We choose the 537-yard Par-5 No. 17 as our favorite at the Links At Challedon.

The hole starts with a slight blind shot. If you have the time, ride up before hitting to see the shape of the fairway and the ideal target. We choose a house off in the distance as our target. Your tee shot should favor the left side of the fairway.

The fairway does slope from left to right. Any shot that goes right will likely end up in high grass that lines the right side of the hole but you really have to slice the ball or block the shot as a right handed golfer to end up in the hazard.

If you can hit a good shot you’ll likely have the opportunity to cut the left corner of the hole and go for the green in two. Your approach will be a shot over small pond to the green.

The green is long and guarded by bunkers in front and behind the green. Most of us mere mortals will choose the cautious route laying up to the left side of the pond leaving a wedge to the green.

Depending on pin position you should still have a good chance a birdie with a good wedge shot. The green has a plenty of slope from back to front so stay below the hole to have a good chance at birdie.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
The course is a good test at just over 6700-yards from the tips. We mere mortals will probably be more comfortable playing from the gold tees at 6300-yards. With the two other tee sets for seniors and the ladies the course offers a reasonable length for all skill levels.

Overall each tee was in good shape. A couple of the Par 3s had a few noticeable divots but nothing out of the norm. It seems the tees on the Par 3s were moved on a regular basis allowing for proper maintenance.

Fairways:
The fairways were in great shape and considering the drought conditions all courses have been dealing with this summer. The staff at the Links At Challedon should be commended. We talked to a maintenance member during our round and he said they've worked real hard hand watering the course to keep it nice and green, and it shows!

Rough:
The rough was in pretty good but like all courses now if you get to far off the beaten path there are some hard pan lies.

They've done a nice job cutting down high grass areas in different spots on the course to make the course more player friendly. With a few blind tee shots on the course, sometimes it's not always apparent where to proceed with your shot.

Traps:
The course is well bunkered, especially around the greens. In the past the course was notorious for dirt bunkers but there was fresh sand in most all the bunkers we ended up in.

Some of the bunkers could use a bit more sand for my tastes especially greenside.

Greens:
The greens at the Links at Challedon were in very good shape. There are some balls marks on the Par 3s but all the greens rolled very true and at a surprisingly quick pace. The good putter will love the challenge.

There greens vary in both size and depth. Some small long greens making for an exact approach and some large accommodating a variety of different pin placements. Some have subtle mild breaks while others slope greatly from front to back or back to front.

Amenities:
The current managment has made great strides in all aspects of amenities at the course. If you make and early tee time you'll get a bottle of warter in your cart.

Current management has made great strides in all aspects in improving the amenities at the course. If you make and early tee time you'll get a bottle of water in your cart.

The clubhouse, bar/grill and locker room have been spruced up, giving it a private clubhouse feel. The course also makes a great place for outings. The decent yet playable layout along with the ability to host large groups is always a plus.

The range has mats, new balls and a new grass tees. There is a nice short game practice green and bunker not far from the first tee. Both were in “on course condition” allowing you to really get a good feel for green speed.

Staff Services:
The entire staff at The Links at Challedon was very friendly and courteous during our round.

There was a beverage cart attendant making the rounds during our visit and we noticed a marshal out minding pace, which was pretty busy for a weekday.

Pace of Play:
For the beginning of October the temperature and weather felt more like mid summer. Our round lasted just over 4 hours and we had minimal wait at the tee.

Overall Average: 4.4, Birdie Course
Nice Course, to play recommendation

We would like to thank the management of the Links at Challedon for having us out to visit and review the course.
