Lee's Hill Golfers' Club

Just an hour south of Washington and one hour north of Richmond you will find the outstanding design and championship layout of the Lee's Hill Golfers' Club.

Built in 1994 the Fredericksburg Virginia course resides on the same rolling hills that Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his troops spent the winter of 1862.

On the course you can't help but be impressed at the quality of the design. The course presents an array of different holes with no real dominate theme.  The natural rolling hills transparently blend within the scenic background creating the ideal setting for the expressive qualities of the course.

The golfer is presented with a mixture of obstacles to battle throughout the course. The contoured fairways seamlessly create various doglegs to test your shot shaping abilities while the encroaching wetlands and water hazards flank both greens and fairways alike guarding against aggressive play.

Strategically positioned fairway and green side bunkers lie in wait to engulf all errant shots and the ample slope of the greens will keep even the best of putters in check.

The course went through a major turf renovation in 2003 and management is working hard to bring the course conditions back to top form. Once the turf changes have had a chance to mature the course should be back in top shape and one of the best venues in all of Northern Virginia. The next time you find yourself in the area and looking for a challenging round stop by and try Lee's Hill, you won't be disappointed.

Amigos favorite Hole:  The 195-yard Number 14 Par 3 was our choice of favorite at Lee's Hill.

This scenic yet intimidating Par 3 requires a steady and accurate iron shot over natural wetlands to an extremely well bunkered two-tiered green.

Depending on club selection and tee set you play, success at this hole can be very elusive. The best advice we can share is pay attention to pin placement. You need to put the ball on the side of the green and more importantly tier where the pin is placed. Being on the wrong tier can make for some very challenging putts.

Review Date: 10/30/2004

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
The tees were average condition. There is good spacing between tee boxes enabling approachability for all skill levels but conditions were spotty. Some tee boxes were shaggy and in need of a fresh cut, some tees had a multitude of divots even on the Par 4s.

Fairways:
The fairways were in good condition with nice contours throughout the course. There were some signs of visible ware and divots that could make for tricky lies.

Rough:
The rough was sparse in areas then good in others. Given the decent weather we expected a better condition. But given the fact that course went through a major turf renovation the year before it was understandable.

Traps:
Nice design protecting the greens and the fairway bunkers were spaced well to protect against aggressive tee shots. Full of nice firm sand, well raked. Could use some more rakes on the course.

Greens:
Well designed with nice contour and positioning behind/around bunkers and other hazards...however, their condition was below the norm for such a great course design. We were later told by management that the turf renovation is still growing in and effecting some greens. Given some time the greens should be back to superb form.

Amenities:
The clubhouse offers all your round necessities and the grill is nice for after round refreshments. The range is below average with worn mats and old balls but it does give you a chance to warm up before your round.

There was no water in any of the coolers on the course and no beverage cart making rounds. This was an 80 degree beautiful October day, how can you not have no water in the coolers and no beverage cart attendant out? At least post a sign or tell customers before they head out on the course.

The carts have GPS which is a nice touch but during our review the GPS pin position was different than the actually course pin position.

Staff Services:
The starter was more like the ticket stub attendant at your local movie theater. "Can I see your ticket, there's the first tee. The rest of the staff was friendly and accommodating.

Pace of Play:
On a busy day on the course we had no real issue with pace. Even though we did wait on a few holes our round proceeded on relatively good pace.

Overall Average: 3.4, Par Course
OK Course, might be worth a play

We would like to thank Mr. Mike Demeza the Manger of Lee's Hill Golfers' Club for welcoming us out to conduct the course review.
