Herndon Centennial Golf Course

A few exits out the Dulles
toll road and not far from the Beltway lies the gentle rolling hills
and picturesque setting of the Herndon Centennial Golf
Course.
Known for attention to detail and year around "top flight condition", this
course instills a welcoming feeling for all levels of golfing
ability with its distinct assortment of differing design
features.
The mixture of reasonable length and open fairways makes this course
great for the beginner but will also challenge the more skilled
players with its "well bunkered" and slick bent-grass greens.
Owned and
operated by the town of Herndon, this course was designed by Ed Ault
in 1978 and throughout the years has hosted several USGA qualifying
events.
A favorite
among locals in Northern Virginia, Herndon Centennial offers a round
of "high end quality golf" at a "municipal price".
Amigos favorite Hole: The
Par-4 343-yard number 10 was our choice for favorite hole at
Herndon Centennial.
One of the most distinct doglegs on the
course, this hole requires necessary accuracy from the tee for an
unhindered and clear 2nd shot into the green. The narrow sloping
green is slightly elevated and well guarded by two sand bunkers.
The view from
the tee at the 10th is slightly elevated from the fairway and is a
nice vantage point for a more expansive view of the course. A large
weeping willow tree guards the right turn of the dogleg and will
likely hinder your approach to the green if you have a tendency to
slice or draw the ball.

By
the time we reached the 10th green the fog broke and gave way to a
beautiful clear afternoon.
The
"Lone Amigo" on this day had a nice drive and was less than 80 yard
out from the green and in perfect position. With the swing of
light pitching wedge the "golf gods" smiled down upon our Amigo
friend and granted a good second shot to the upper half of the green
and within the general location of the flag.
A birdie attempt was
within reach and the hole lay less than 10 feet from the Amigos
ball. But like most of the other greens at Herndon Centennial this
one was read just a hair too much left and the "Lone Amigo" had
to “settle” for par to close out the hole.
Review Date:

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)
Tees:
In good shape with variable tees on some holes.
Fairways:
Classic east coast design, the fairways are tree lined with varying doglegs on different holes. The bent grass is nice to hit from.
Rough:
Variable rough lines the fairways and thick around the greens. With the speed of the greens your short chipping play is definitely tested.
Traps:
In good shape but few and far between. Most holes were guarded on the greens but not many fairway bunkers. Additional fairway bunkers could take the course to the next level as one of the best municipals in the area.
Greens:
The highlight of a round at Herndon Centennial are the bent grass undulating greens. These fast greens will not only test your putting skills but can match up to any of the best high end course greens in the area but at a municipal course price.
Amenities:
Older clubhouse with full service grill and patio overlooking putting green and two fairways. Nice putting green area and driving range are available for warming up before your round.
Staff Services:
The staff at Herndon Centennial is attentive and friendly. From starter to clubhouse staff all were courteous and attentive to our needs.
Pace of Play:
There was minimal wait between pairings and the entire round was played in under 5 hours.
Overall Average:
4, Birdie Course
Good Course, worth a play
