General's Ridge Golf Course

Generals Ridge  The General's Ridge golf course formerly known as Manassas Park, reopened in 2001 after major renovations headed by renowned course designer Jerry Slack.

Not only did the course gain a new and captivating name based on local civil war history, it gained flexibility and playability to attract the novice weekend golfer. Before the renovations this course had a reputation for poor upkeep and difficulty in play.

Now the course has widened fairways and increased green size so even the novice can enjoy a round at General's Ridge.

With rolling hills and towering hardwood tree lined fairways the scenery at General's Ridge embodies the best of the Virginia countryside. The views along the ridges of the course were probably once the lookout point for soldiers overlooking and protecting the Civil War encampment that lay claim to this land in 1861.

Generals Ridge VAAmigos favorite Hole: The number 10 par 5 is the hole we Amigos liked best at General's Ridge. This relatively short, reachable in 2, 431 yard hole has a dramatic approach shot to a small and "rough encased" green.

The tee shot is best if played slight left to a small ridge approximately 225 yards away. If its your first trip to the course we recommend riding up to observe the green before attempting your second shot.

The green is hidden down a small decline at the end of the hole.  Not only are you shooting at green that you can't see from your second shot, the green is encased on three sides by rough that is less that 20 feet away on all sides.

Generals Ridge VAOn the left side there is a drop off the from a 1 to 3 foot stone wall that was built to give the green a feel in elevation on one side. On the front right side of the green is hill that if you ball lands upon makes for a difficult lie to chip from.

The Amigos advice would be to lay up before the decline in fairway to the green. This would leave you with about a 75 yards chip to the green.  Your more likely to have the necessary accuracy from a 75 yard sand/pitching wedge than a 200 yard fairway wood or 3 iron.

On this day both Amigos felt confident in a long second shot but the daunting features near the green were to much for our golf skills. One Amigo landed left of the green in thick rough below the stone encased green and the other landed slightly front right on the hill for a difficult chip shot.

Review Date: 05/24/2002

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
In fair shape but could use some work with staggering the tee areas.

Fairways:
Acutely shaped with varying depths.

Rough:
There is some work still being done on some holes to improve the course but the work does not interfere with play. Some rough on the approach to different greens is very dense. An accurate approach shot to the green is vital at General's Ridge.

Traps:
Even with the heavy storms recently the bunkers were in decent shaped and recently raked.

Greens:
The highlight of the course, excellent shape. The greens were moderate in speed but very challenging.

Amenities:
Updated clubhouse with all niceties any golfer would desire. Adjacent bar and grill make the 19th hole extremely tempting.

Staff Services:
Everyone was helpful and gracious during our visit.

Pace of Play:
There was no wait on any hole either from groups behind or in front.

Overall Average: 4.3, Birdie Course
Nice Course, to play recommendation

The Amigos would like to thank Mr. Rob Martin the General Manger and Head Professional at General's Ridge for allowing the GolfinAmigos to visit and review the course.
