Forest Greens Golf Course

Not far south past the mixing bowl of I-95 lies the variable hilly fairways and multi-tiered greens of the Forest Greens Golf Course.

Course designer Clyde Johnston's distinct approach of intertwining the natural curves of the land with the ample towering woodlands is the perfect combination of true risk reward golf. The dense tree lined fairways, elevated tees, and undulating greens bring to fruition a classic east coast style course design that  will give every club in your bag a "true test of game".

Amigos favorite Hole: On a layout that exudes a varying array of styles, we felt the 552-yard par-5 18th had a perfect mixture of all the design qualities of  the course.

This demanding uphill left dogleg starts off with a tee shot challenged by two well placed fairway bunkers that come in to play. The reason these bunkers are so menacing is because part of the left fairway is cut off by the bend in the dog left.

So if you can't keep it in the right side of the fairway, your forced to hit a lay-up shot for your second. Then your third shot is a much longer approach shot to an uphill green.

The uphill rolling fairway has two lay-up plateaus that are perfectly positioned for your second shot. For those unable to reach the green in two and for those with any doubt in ball striking ability your best bet is to play conservative on keeping the ever present potential damage at a minimum.

On a humid August Sunday, Forest Greens had severely wilted our golfing sprit by the time we reached the 18th. But being the steady and every optimistic group, we geared up with all good intentions to finish the day on a positive note.

But like most of our day, both tee shots were polar opposites with one in the right fairway bunker and the other far left. From this disastrous start the rest of the hole was none to pretty and in the end we finished with two double bogeys.

Review Date: 08/16/2003

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
Five sets of tees are available for every level of playing ability. Adequately maintained but did show signs of a heavy play. Tees looked to be moved regularly which helps keep wear to a minimum and always helps at popular courses.

Fairways:
Nice Bermuda grass fairways reminiscent of fairways further south. This hilly course is hard to find flat lies but if you're in the fairway chance of reaching in regulation is good. The course is not long and favors accuracy over length.

Rough:
The rough was in great shape but just a to long for normal everyday players. Will punish severely if you don't hit the fairways. Very thick around the greens making for tough chips when approach shots don't drop on.

Traps:
There was a heavy rainstorm the night before and standing water was in several traps. The traps that were playable were in good shape. Good design and well placed for wayward shots.

Greens:
The green design is tremendous, large multi-level greens that had a allot of flare and character. The greens putted pretty true with a moderate pace. Some of the greens were a bit bumpy.

Amenities:
Outstanding practice facility that includes a state of the art golf teaching academy, natural grass driving range and large multi-tired putting green. The pro shop was well stocked and the adjoining cafe is complete with full service grill. Nice patio area over looking the 10th tee and 18th green awaits those in need of a cold beverage after their round.

Staff Services:
The starter was extremely affable and had plenty of extra advice for our first visit to the course. The beverage cart attendant was seen many times throughout a very muggy mid day round and drinking water was available every third hole.

Pace of Play:
Our round was just under 5 hours. We were not rushed or waiting at any hole and the course ranger was spotted frequently out and about minding pace.

Overall Average: 4.23, Birdie Course
Good Course, worth a play
