Diamond Ridge Golf Course
Some courses just "get
it". They get the fact that the average golfer usually
looks for three constants when choosing a course to play. If you can provide
a decent course, at a good price
with a
convenient location then you will never be short of
golfers to fill up the tee sheet.
The Diamond Ridge Golf
Course just outside of Baltimore Maryland does just that; they "get
it". They get "it" by meeting and exceeding the
basic needs of the recreational golfer.
The course itself is what you
would expect from a county owned course. It's not a tricked up
design at all. Most holes are pretty straight forward, with good
conditions. The course does have some nice elevation changes and
some very lengthy par threes to challenge your game.
The
front nine is relatively open giving you time to warm up before you
make the turn. Once on the back nine the course throws in a unique
twist by offering three par 3's, three par 4's and three par 5's.
This may seem quirky when comparing it to other courses but it's
actually a very clever way to make the course more approachable for
those that struggle with the driver. It gives the golfer a variety
of options to manage their game.
But even though the course is friendly, it's no pushover. Even
though the overall length isn't intimidating, the par threes alone
will test your ability to get up and down. All par threes are
deceptively well guarded by strategically placed sand bunkers,
environmental areas and water hazards. You will need to choose the
right club, have confidence in your stroke and swing away.
But
what makes Diamond Ridge an all around great option for the
recreational golfer is the price. At $37 dollars on the
weekend with cart, it's a great deal. The weekend play rate drops in
the afternoon for walkers and the twilight and senior rates are just
a great deal.
Amigos
favorite Hole:
The
470-yard Number
13 Par 4 was our choice of favorite at Diamond Ridge.
This demanding par four plays downhill the entire
length of the hole requiring an excellent tee shot to a fairway
guarded by hardwood trees on both side.
For most your approach is a long iron to a green that
is guarded by two well-placed bunkers. Once on the green you will find an
ample amount of slope to challenge your putting abilities.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)
Tees:
The tee boxes were in ok shape. The course gets a ton of play being so close to downtown Baltimore. They tee markers should be move around more to minimize ware.
Fairways:
Fairways were in good shape and very green. There was a good bit of visible divots making for some questionable lies but with the amount of play the course gets you could tell the maintenance staff does a great job at trying to minimize damage.
Rough:
One cut of discernable rough from the fairway; thick in spots, especially around the greens, making for some delicate chips.
Traps:
The traps were in excellent shape with plenty of fresh raked sand in every bunker. Made for very approachable escapes around the greens.
Greens:
Deceiving greens. From first glance they look slow but once you've had a chance to get used to them they roll very true and at a medium pace. Only disappointments was the way the holes were cut. The vast majority of cups were not cut nearly deep enough, and the plastic liner was often less than half an inch below the level of the green. This is a problem that should be remedied easily.
Amenities:
Everything the golfer needs is available. The new clubhouse is spacious and has an outstanding venue for 19th hole activities. The clubhouse is fully stocked and the practice range and greens are in course shape condition. Only recommendation would be some grass tees at the range.
Staff Services:
First class service at a municipal price! The entire staff was extremely friendly and accommodating during our visit. The beverage cart attendant made many trips around the circuit.
Pace of Play:
Our round moved at a moderate pace. We did have to wait some at certain spots on the course, especially around the Par 3s.
Overall Average:
4, Birdie Course
Good Course, worth a play
