Chesapeake Hills Golf Course

In today's golf world it's easy for the "average golfer" to become overwhelmed. New courses today seemed to be specifically designed with gimmicks to the lure in the golfing public.

It might be a tricked out 700-yard Par 5 or multi-tiered roller coaster greens but at times these gimmicks are not to friendly to the "average golfer".

Some days you just want some sense of normalcy in your life with quality fun at a course that's more manageable for us "average" golfers. The classics still exist there just becoming more increasingly hard to find. We recently visited the Chesapeake Hills golf course in Lusby Maryland a classic that is still around for us all to enjoy.

This course was once a gem known by all the locals in Calvert County as a fun test of golf. But in past years and due to poor management the upkeep and condition of the course fell to the wayside. Thankfully last year Billy Casper Golf was brought in to resurrect the course and bring it back to it's quality stature a classic design deserves.

New fairways were installed last year and are growing in nicely. The greens are in very good shape and still have those narrow angles and subtle contours of the original course.

The hilly layout of the course poses an additional challenge yet is still walkable for those who enjoy walking. The narrow greens make for testy approach shots yet with manageable speed and mild undulation will reward those with a decent short game.

Amigos favorite Hole: Our favorite hole at Chesapeake Hills was the 348-yard Par 4 Number 11. The hole requires two strategic shots to have any real chance at par. The fairway from the tee looks narrow but once on the fairway it's more open than it appears. Your club selection will depend upon length but most should probably choose a 4 iron, 5/7 wood. The ideal shot is straight down the middle of the fairway with no more distance than 200 yards.

At the end of the fairway at approximately 215-yards there is a dramatic drop off to a hazard running across the fairway. Beyond the hazard there is nothing but an uphill lie so trying reach beyond the hazard with your tee shot is not the most prudent of plays.

Once in the fairway you're left with about a 120- yard iron shot to a green uphill. Depending upon pin placement you may have a good chance at birdie but if it's your first visit to the course the green looks much larger at the green than from a distance.

Review Date: 05/29/2004

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
Sufficiently groomed greens with some tee boxes still being reworked. Variable length but only three sets of tees. The course is relatively short in length and on some holes there is additional tee box length to add another longer set of tees.

Fairways:
The fairways were totally overhauled with Bermuda grass about a year prior to our visit. They are growing in nicely and looking in pretty good condition. Easy to hit from and made for nice lies when we actually found the fairway.

Rough:
Two cuts of rough but not a real dominating factor for the course. Some bare spots are abound but none that are really in play if your able to keep it in play.

Traps:
The traps were well groomed but needed some more sand. It makes your escapes challenging.

Greens:
Best aspect of the course and in superb shape. Very well kept and speed is medium but true. Very narrow greens that will test your approach shots. Don't forget to bring your good chipping wedge because you will need it.

Amenities:
Decent range and putting green is available. The clubhouse and facility is in need of a facelift and the new management company is working hard to make improvements.

Staff Services:
The entire staff was very friendly. The beverage cart attendant many many trips around the course during our round and the Beacon Grille is a welcoming 19th hole gathering spot.

Pace of Play:
Pace was pretty good but during our round we were sent out as a twosome with another twosome behind us and we were both behind a foursome. But even though we waited allot on the front nine the round moved at adequate pace.

Overall Average: 3.4, Par Course
OK Course, might be worth a play

We would like to thank Mr. Tom Williams of Billy Casper Golf for welcoming us out to conduct the course review.
