Carroll Valley Golf at Liberty Mountain Resort
What
makes a great golf course? Is it the unique layout and challenge
the course dispenses to bring the best out in your game? Or
is it the surrounding scenery and views framed from the greens and
tees that inspire not only your love for the game but the subtle
nuisances of blending nature and golf?
Most would
argue that a combination of the above two characteristics make a
great golf course. And if that's the case, then the Carroll
Valley Golf Course in Fairfield Pennsylvania is a one of the
great.
This 1965 Ault & Clark design is a true
embodiment of golf at its best. The course meanders through Carroll
Valley taking the golfer on both a scenic tour guide and test of game. The wide
open generous fairways beg for the driver and the testy fast greens
require a delicate yet deliberate approach in course management.

Amigos
Favorite Hole:
This course has a few holes that vied for favorite but the one we
liked best was the extremely long
584-yard Par 5 number 4.
From the tee the hole plays over a ridge
that hides the green back and to the left. Running parallel and just
in front
of the green is "Toms Creek" providing a well placed water hazard
for those willing to try and reach the green in two. Even on a long
Par 5 your second shot will play downhill so for the longer hitters
it is a possibility to go for the green in two.
On a day when the driver was hard to
tame, the solo Amigo pushed his drive way right. But as luck would
have it there is generous room to stray to the right and found the
ball sitting up in the thick rough.
With a good strike of three wood the
ball ran down the fairway and was within a pitching wedge to the
green. But with a pitch that was not ideal, the ball landed just
short of the green leaving a testy pitch to save par. But with one
of his better chips of the day the ball was placed within 5 feet of
the cup leaving a relatively easy putt to save par.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)
Tees:
Four levels of tees and very nicely maintained.
Fairways:
Wide open and friendly. Very well maintained and receptive for all games and clubs.
Rough:
Only one thick cut of rough and did punish if your shot strayed off the fairway. But with the size of the fairways, you have to really stray for the thick rough to come into play. The rough around the green was of medium length and receptive of chips.
Traps:
Excellent Traps. Perfect depth of sand for no excuse escapes. Recently raked and given the rain the previous night it shows great concern to detail by the maintenance staff.
Greens:
Most common feature is back to front slope and "wickedly fast". Every green was in very good shape with little to no sign of ware. To have any chance you must be below the hole, so remember keep your shots into the green in front of the flag. This is the perfect course for you to test of your putting abilities
Amenities:
The "Tavern on the Green" is perfect for a pre-round meal or 19th hole refreshments. Large chipping and putting green is just behind the number 1 tee for testing the green speed prior to your round. The clubhouse is well stocked with all the goodies one might have forgotten at home.
Staff Services:
One of the friendliest staffs around. Everyone was very accommodating with any request we had.
Pace of Play:
The pace was on average with minimal wait.
Overall Average:
4.53, Birdie Course
