Cannon Ridge Golf Club

Amidst the rolling hills of Fredericksburg Virginia and only a stones throw away from the banks of the Rappahanock River is the newly constructed Cannon Ridge Golf Club.

Once a venue where Armies of North and South collided in the Civil War, Cannon Ridge is the first of three courses slated for the "Celebrate Virginia" development and is the first design from former PGA tour professional Mr. Deane Beman.

When you drive up to the course you begin to see why Cannon Ridge is setting the "new standard" for courses in the area. The meticulously maintained small bent grass greens and rolling fairways are a delight to play and with a slope of 146 from the tips a challenge for all.

The first hole unveils a set of five tees of varying length to accommodate every skill level. The underlying terrain of the fairways will force a few uneven lies and the forced carries from the back two sets of tees is a nice touch.

The course packs a nice punch and will make use of every club in your bag. From the short risk reward Par 4 number 8, to the mammoth 575-yard  number 16, variety is the "spice of life" and  mainstay adage of the Cannon Ridge Golf Club.

Amigos favorite Hole: At some courses you can't find a favorite hole but at Cannon Ridge all 18 have there own individual mystic. But in the end the consensus favorite was the number-12 551-yard Par 5.

The forced carry tee box form the Cannon and Grey tees frame the fairway and green giving you ample warning of what type of play is needed conquer this hole for par. You're given a generous landing area from the tee but depending on your length anything over 260 yards will result a downhill lie for your second shot.

If going for the green in two, our advice is to choose your 240 club for a flat lie before the approach shot. This way you can really go after the narrow green with your second shot for an attempt at eagle or birdie.

Beware; any miss hit with your second shot makes for a delicate chip. A small gully is about 40 yards short of the green and a good-sized bunker protects the front. The green sits above the approaching fairway and slopes a bit from back to front.

Review Date: 04/03/2004

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
The course has five sets of tees that ranging from 7,010 to 4,950 yards. The staggering sets of tees add to the aesthetic beauty of the course and gives a wide range of length for all skill levels.

Fairways:
The rolling flow of fairways meld together in a design that is simply dazzling and striking to see. For a course that is less than a year old the exceptional maintenance and quality feel is a testament to a great staff. Also we had heavy rain the night before and there was little to any noticeable standing water anywhere.

Large and generous on some holes but the rolling fairways will require you to hit a few shots during your round from an angled lie. Pay attention to your target point and remember to compensate based on ball position being below or above your feet.

Rough:
Still early in the season so the rough still has a good month to toughen up and grow in. One discernible cut from the fairway and in outstanding shape.

Traps:
Great placement in the fairways and around the greens. Making them a test of your sand game but also approachable. Wonderful depth and feel with an ample amount of beautiful white fluffy sand.

Greens:
A recent aeration diminished our ability to truly judge the greens but given the young age of the course they were very approachable with varying undulation. Once they heal and firm up the greens will be a good test for all putters. Each green was in fine overall shape and again we can't say enough about the outstanding overall condition.

Amenities:
The practice area and driving range are natural grass with many varied length flags for practicing distance. Complement this with a full size chipping and practice green and you have a great place to hone your game or warm up before you round. The additional practice green not far from the 1st tee is another nice touch.

The clubhouse is still in development but the temporary pro shop meets all the needs for your round.

Staff Services:
The beverage attendant made frequent trips during our round and the entire staff was helpful. The starter was brief in his introduction and the ranger made many trips around to mind pace.

Pace of Play:
Not one complaint, we didn't have to wait the entire round and didn't even see the group in front of us until the last couple of holes, the groups seemed to have ample spacing .

Overall Average: 4.65, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
