Bull Run Golf Club

Near historic Manassas where the first major battle of the Civil War was fought and crafted from the grounds where soldiers both union and confederate lost their lives is the tribute and namesake of the Bull Run Golf Club.

Located in Haymarket Virginia the abundance of flanking fairway bunkers and punishing rough proudly carries forth the tradition of "battle ground". With wide-open fairways and ample room for the "long ball", Bull Run will reward those who can regularly hit their target but if the "natural fade" or "draw" is more conducive to your play the variety of plentiful bunkers placed perfectly throughout the course can make for a long day.

The Greens are a variety of shape with slight undulating. For those golfers who "roll the good roll", the fair speed and slope of the greens at Bull Run can make for a delightful low score with very manageable two putts.

Amigos favorite Hole: There was no contest in selecting which hole we liked best at Bull Run. The winner and one of the best closing holes of any course in the DC suburban area is the 583-yard par 5 18th.

This mammoth of a hole is perfection "risk-reward" with a possible fairway wood second shot over an ample water hazard. All three Amigos with the sun setting had good drives to the middle of the large open fairway.

With three different outcomes on our second shot, one just off the green, one in the water and one laying up, all Amigos wished they could have used a late mulligan in hopes to change the final holes outcome. But true to Amigo form we all took our bogey and two double bogeys and limped away crying for another attempt to battle Bull Run.

Review Date: 08/10/2002

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
A little worn in places but in otherwise good shape. The variety of tees make for a different feel and challenge for every level of player.

Fairways:
The fairways were in good shape but worn in a few spots, large open and make for good approaches to the green.

Rough:
The rough was "first rate" with great variability and unlike other courses in the area Bull Run is maintaining the rough as much as the fairway even in the dry weather. This is great for the weekend and amateur golfer because to often we end up in the rough. Meaning for better escapes because the ground isn't so hard and neglected like at some courses.

Traps:
In outstanding condition and lots of them. Many holes have more than the stander one to two fairway bunkers and over half the greens are protected well. Great depth making for good escapes.

Greens:
Terrific greens that will test you but are also fair. The speeds are reasonable but the subtle breaks and varying depths on some will definitely test your ability to make good rolls.

Amenities:
A beautiful full service clubhouse with everything the golfers heart may desire. Full service restaurant and bar are on the same premises with a beautiful view form the veranda and deck that lines the back of the clubhouse.

Staff Services:
Staff members were courteous but the starter was no where to be found before we began our round. The beverage cart only made one pass and it was the last call during our entire round. During our twilight round at the turn we all had burgers and a Cajun chicken sandwich that was excellent.

Pace of Play:
We could barely tell there was anyone else on the course! No wait in front and no push from behind.

Overall Average: 4.4, Birdie Course
