Bryce Resort Golf Course
Not
far from the beltway lies the pristine picturesque scenery of
Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Not only is this location one of the
most beautiful in our fair land, but also the home and location of the 6295
yard, par 71, Ed Ault designed Bryce Resort golf course.
Unlike most mountain
courses, this relatively flat course meanders through the valley
that encompasses the grounds of the Resort. The lush tree lined
fairways of the front nine are a great test of your shot making
ability, while the back nine is more open and approachable.
At only 6300 yards
from the tips most long hitters might shy away from the
course. But if you're seeking a good test of shot making
ability, Bryce is just the "ticket".
Good scoring is had at Bryce through accurate iron play not length
off the tee. From the tee make sure to pay special attention to the
out of bounds because trouble does not lurk very far away from the
fairway on some holes.
Amigos
favorite Hole:
The hole we liked best at
the Bryce Resort golf course was the number 14, 374-yard par 4.
With the most
scenic tee box on the entire course, it's a nice vantage point to take
in the spectacular setting and view of the surrounding mountains.
We choose
this hole not only for the great view but also
because the hole exudes all the chrematistics of the course.
A pretty
straight but narrow approach to the fairway, tree lined on at least
one side and a well-guarded small green. With a bunker on the left
front and a small water hazard pond all along the right side of the
green, be sure and make the right club selection for the down hill
approach shot.
On
a beautiful Saturday made for golf, both Amigos had great drives and
were in perfect shape for putting it close to the hole for a
a birdie attempt. But as happens from time to time our approach
shots to the green were not as exact as we would have liked leaving
us with two long putts.
With a
green that slopes from back to front one Amigo was well above the
hole and one lie parallel and to the side.
The Amigo
above the hole went heavy with his birdie attempt, leaving a lengthy
par putt. With his second putt back up hill to the hole the ball
just lipped out ending in a dreaded three putt. Final outcome, one
par and one bogey,
not our best hole of the day but not to shabby.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)
Tees:
The tee boxes were the best seen on any course so far this year. In beautiful shape and painstakingly manicured. Hat's off to the superintendent.
Fairways:
Fairways were in good shape and very accepting of irons.
Rough:
Rough was thick around the greens but not as discernible off the fairways. Well kept both off and around the fairways.
Traps:
All the traps seemed to be in "very good shape" and easy to escape from. The fairways were well bunkered and in perfect position for wayward tee shots.
Greens:
The greens rolled at moderate pace and were in very good shape. We liked the greens allot but due to recent aeration they were a bit bumpy . Once healed from the maintenance they should be in superb shape.
Amenities:
The resort offers a first class driving range and practice facility. The 15 station practice tee is 300 yards in length with natural grass tees. In addition a 65-yard tee to practice green with two sand bunkers is available for short game work. One additional putting and chipping green is also available just before the number one tee.
The lodge doubles as the clubhouse during the warmer months and is abundantly stocked with all the accoutrements needed before and after your round.
Staff Services:
The entire staff was extremely outgoing and nice. The starter was thoroughly detailed in his guidance especially knowing we hadn't played the course before.
Pace of Play:
Our round got off to a slow start but the pace picked up once we played through a five-some with juniors. After we played through, the marshal then proceeded to tell our two-some we needed to speed things up but then realized we just played through a five-some and cut us some slack. Just a suggestion, but fivesomes with juniors probably isn't your best option for weekend play.
Overall Average:
4.05, Birdie Course
Good Course, worth a play
