Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club Bear Grizzly

Set within a planned community just three miles inland of Bethany Beach Delaware lies the picturesque stylish links of Bear Trap Dunes.

The course opened 18 of 27-holes in 1999 and rounded out the three bears in 2001 with an additional nine holes. Each nine is affectionately named after bear types, (Kodiak, Grizzly and Black) and was designed by prominent course architect Rick Jacobson.

One of the first things you notice on the course is the amount of detail embodied by the surrounding landscape. The ideal backdrop is constructed from a multitude of sand dunes and ever present high heather fescue.

These two characteristics create a serene natural setting that creates visual separation from hole-to-hole and the surrounding planned community. The end product is a layout that evokes a true sea side links setting.

Each nine hole track embodies the perfect mix of playability and challenge to suit all levels of ability. All three nines are under 7,000 yards with approachable Par 4s and reachable in two par 5's. The course puts an emphasis on a shot making ability rather than length, it's a nice a diversion from the norm of modern course development.

The greens offer a wide variety of slope with some tricky collection areas awaiting any missed approach shot.

But the best defense the course has against the golfer is left entirely up to the cooperation of mother nature. The wind will dictate your entire approach requiring added forethought of club and shot selection.

But the most notable quality of the course are the variety of options in approach it gives the golfer. If you like to use strategy and think your way around a course then Bear Trap Dunes will always keep you guessing.

A good example is each Par 3 presents at least two natural defenses the golfer must consider before hitting your shot. One which you would expect is water; sometimes in front guarding one side of the green. The other defense mechanism are traps; strategically placed greenside and usually opposite of the water, your ability to judge carry distance and direction are important.

The design mixes a multitude of different deterrents to protect against over aggressive play.

Amigos Favorite Hole: With so many deserving holes to choose from at Bear Trap Dunes we decided to break away from the norm and choose a favorite Bear instead.

Of the three bears we favored Black Bear the most in our choice as favorite. The newest of the three bears is also arguably the most challenging.

Black Bear makes the golfer think strategically both at the tee and with approach shots. Choosing when to hit iron for position is sometimes a good call. The ability to minimize your miss hits will determine the difference between a standard wedge shot and a tricky chip.

Which shot do you feel more comfortable attempting?

Review Date: 10/09/2005

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
Each nine has 5 sets of tee lengths for every level of play. Be sure to pick the correct tee for your skill level. The course puts more emphasis on shot making not length.

Each tee box was perfectly groomed. The large tees provide ample room to assist in varying lengths. Great for local player who plays the course often creating difference and varying challenge.

Fairways:
The bent grass fairways blend perfectly with the contours and turns of the high heather grass that frames every hole. The conditions were superb with ample landing areas.

Rough:
There is one primary cut of rough that is thick around the greens and playable off the fairways. The second cut of rough showed a few signs of the tough late summer conditions but in better shape than 90% of the courses we have seen in the past 2 months.

The high heather grass that frames every hole and water hazard is picturesque and punishing. Even though you can see plenty of the grass it rarely comes into play unless you hit a total miss hit.

Traps:
On a very well bunkered course we had ample opportunity to test both the greenside and bunker fairways. The conditions were perfect greenside making escapes playable and easy with an exact amount of sand. The fairway bunkers were relatively thin leaving easy escapes.

There are some traps that blend seamlessly with the high heather grass and if your unlucky enough to enter one good luck with an unimpeded escape.

Greens:
The greens are challenging with plenty undulation. Depending on pin position you must hit the correct level that the pin resides to have a decent chance at birdie.

The conditions were perfect in every facet. The speed was quick but not uncontrollable. Being below the hole is key and if your on the top side of the slope a gentle touch is necessary to keep it within gimmie range.

Amenities:
Everything you want and desire is available right on the property. The pro shop is stocked with every necessity and the Den Restaurant makes for a great location for post round drinks and dinner.

Large range and practice area. The large chipping green and putting green will get you ready for course like conditions.

Staff Services:
Everyone on the Bear Trap Dunes staff was cordial and accommodating during our visit.

The beverage cart made multiple trips around the course during our round and the snack shack at the turn is perfect for a quick stop for necessary beverage or food.

Pace of Play:
We had no issue with pace the entire 27 holes. Our tee time was at noon and was able to get in all three nines of play prior to sunset.

Overall Average: 4.95, Birdie Course
Outstanding Course, must play recommendation
