Bald Mountain Golf Course
A
classic example of mountain golf is
the only way to explain the narrow fairways and varying changes in
elevation from tee, to fairway, and then to green of the Bald
Mountain golf course.
With many holes perfectly sculpted
within the narrow winding valley adjacent Bald mountain, this course
has grasped all outlying effects of the beautiful surroundings and
intertwined them perfectly with a unique course design that takes
the golfer on a golf experience soon not forgotten.
The original of two courses owned
and operated at the Lake Lure Beach and Golf Resort, Bald
Mountain is an outstanding example of grasping and incorporating the
original lay of the land instead of totally changing the original
track to fit the design of the course.
With a recent redesign of all
18 greens over the past year, the greens now have a classic east
coast feel with slight undulation and fair readable speed. The
slight bends in break along the new greens are the exact opposite of
the greens on the resorts sister course Apple Valley making the Lake
Lure Golf and Beach resort one of the GolfinAmigos favorite
destinations for our golf getaways.
Amigos
favorite Hole:
The hole we liked the best at Bald Mountain was the Par 3
169-yard 16th. This beautiful golf hole was the setting for a
scene in the movie Dirty Dancing back in the 1980's.
The approach seems simple with a
medium wedge but the entire green is guarded by the encroaching lake
on the front, and if that wasn't enough, two sand traps lie right
off the right front side.
On this overcast and misty day, all
4 amigos were lucky enough to stay dry and at least near the green
off the tee. Two Amigos were close enough to the pin for a chance at
birdie but the wet greens were to much for any Amigo to read. Final
outcome, 3 par's and 1 bogey.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)
Tees:
In good shape and nicely maintained. Variable tee placement for different players abilities is as always a good touch to any course.
Fairways:
In great shape. On a moderately wet day there was little to no noticeable gathering of water anywhere.
Rough:
Thick varying grass around the greens makes for tough escapes and thicker heather grass in some areas make for challenging escapes. With a mixture of water, elevation changes and trees that line just about every fairway you have to bring the straight shot to have any chance at scoring well at Bald Mountain.
Traps:
Superbly maintained and forgiving. Even on a drizzly day no trap had any standing water and a forgiving feel to escape from.
Greens:
All greens were redesigned over the past year and were in wonderful shape. The sizes are larger on some holes but keep the feel of classic east coast greens with small slight breaks. The speed is very readable and good for amateur play.
Amenities:
Full service clubhouse, adjacent grill/restaurant, driving range and all the extras to meet any golfers needs.
Staff Services:
Warm and welcoming with lots of southern charm.
Pace of Play:
Little wait from any point on the course. The Ranger does a good job and keeping all groups at pace and even on a wet damp day our round was just over 4 and a half hours.
Overall Average:
4.25, Birdie Course
Good Course, worth a play
