Algonkian Golf Course Review Date: 03/02/2002

Algonkian Golf Course  About 11 miles out route 7 past Tysons corner lies the Algonkian Regional park in Sterling Virginia. Within the park hidden among this sanctuary of nature is the mature tree lined fairways of the Algonkian Golf Course.

With its moderately priced greens fees and hacker friendly layout this unspoiled older course is a favorite among locals and a good confidence builder. Even though the championship tees surpass 7000 yards each hole is relatively straight forward and wide open allowing for less than perfect tee shots.

The mix of a few long Par 5's and short Par 3's give the course enough length to please both the golfer who likes to hit the fairway wood and those who favor the the challenge of short iron play.

Algonkian Golf CourseAmigos favorite Hole: The hole we liked the best was the par 3, number 13. The large green is surrounded by mature trees on the back and has a strategically placed bunker that lines the right side. These two characteristics require a accurately placed tee shot for any chance at birdie.

On a blustery early Saturday in March both Amigos had outstanding tee shots and were within 15 feet of the hole for birdie. But to our demise, and lack of confident putting game, both putts ran by the hole and we had to settle for par.

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:

The tee boxes were well groomed with few marked off areas for restoration.

Fairways:
The fairways should be fine once the irrigation and new watering system is in place. At some holes it impeded the natural path of the ball but not enough to make that much difference in score. Has a few issues with drainage, so if there was recent rain it could be a soggy round.

Rough:
One cut of rough with little distinction from the fairway. Rough around the green was in decent shape and cut low.

Traps:
Nicely spaced in the fairways and moderately maintained. The bunkers around the greens could stand to be raked more frequently.

Greens:
Large, approachable with subtle undulation and medium pace.

Amenities:
The clubhouse is loaded with everything a golfer needs and a fully stocked snack bar and grill.

Staff Services:
The staff service extremely inviting.

Pace of Play:
At each tee box there was little wait between groups.

Overall Average: 3.45, Par Course
OK Course, might be worth a play

We would like to thank Mr. Rodney Pryor the manager of Algonkian for welcoming the GolfinAmigos and allowing us to review the course.
