1757 Golf Club

Recently we made it out to the 1757 Golf Club Grand Opening in Ashburn Virginia. We were excited to witness first-hand one of the most anticipated new course openings in years.

Initially opened last year, the club is under the stewardship of Billy Casper Golf, one of the best golf management companies in the country. At that time the amenities were limited and only ten-holes were open for play. It was just enough to wet our appetite and see for ourselves what attracted Billy Casper Golf to the course. The facility and course was an ongoing project that would open in phases with a vision and potential of what could be one of the finest daily fee venues in the entire Northern Virginia region.

We are happy to report the vision has been realized if not surpassed. The combination of private club amenities, course condition manicured practice facilities and tremendous shot makers delight Par-70 course sum up the ideal standard of what a daily fee course should exude. This once beleaguered highly exclusive private club is now a "beacon of light" for all die-hard DMV golfers to enjoy!

When you first arrive at the property you can fully see the vision of the clubs original intent. The 1757 Restaurant is now open featuring a wide variety of dishes specializing in American "fresh fair". The stylishly appointed dinning room and patio overlook the Par-3 18th green and practice area.

Do you have an outing, reception, corporate event or wedding to plan? 1757 has a ballroom and smaller corporate rooms to host just about any gathering. The beautifully appointed setting will impress even the most discriminating of tastes.

When you make your way to the back of the clubhouse you can't but help to do a "double-take" when you first gaze upon the range. Actually calling this practice facility a "range" might be an insult. The 56 station "U" shaped bay has state-of-the-art hitting turf with a large open field offering several course condition greens as targets. If you make your way to the side of the clubhouse you'll find and expansive short-game area including tees, mini-fairways, bunkers and greens with lengths for shots up to 100-yards.

On the course you'll be challenged by a 6,600-yard Par-70 gem that demands your full attention. The wide assortment of varying design aspects will stimulate you visually at the tee and yet at the same time test your course management skills. Routed through hardwood trees the layout is intertwined with a barrage of different water hazards including, creeks, streams, lakes and views of the Broad Run River.

The most impressive element of the course is the “variety" it imparts. No two holes even come close to looking or feeling similar. The course starts with a parkland setting where accuracy is the most important aspect of your game. However, once you make the turn it seems the course turns into a different place with an open feel where you finally feel free to cut loose with the driver.

A great design will impart difference; it will stick in your mind long after you've completed your round. That's exactly how we felt after our first round at 1757 Golf Club and we can't wait to make our next tee time!

Amigos Favorite Hole: Have you ever had a girlfriend where the relationship is truly a "love-hate" paradox? Remember that one woman where the chemistry was so spicy it felt like a drug? Yet within the same woman the sound of her voice, laugh or slightly crooked eye made you want run for the exit as fast as you can?

Well that's the feeling we have about the 419-yard Par-4 No. 6 at 1757 Golf Club.

On the tee it's visually stunning. It's a severe dog-leg right with a water hazard guarding the entire right side. This hole is the embodiment of risk-reward just inviting you to hit a good drive and hopefully carry the corner of the dog-leg. But what you can't see from the fairway is a relatively narrow lay-up area. You really have to hit the perfect drive.

The smart move is hybrid off the tee straight up the fairway. But if you choose the smart move you'll still have a demanding second shot to the green guarded by water on the right and high grass and a retaining wall just to the right. What looks so beautiful from the tee is a devilish delight that will keep you coming back for more. Because like that one girlfriend it’s not fun to give up you just keep coming back for pleasure and pain!

Review Date: 05/08/2010

Course review ratings are conducted on a five point scale. ( 1 = Double Bogey 3 = Par 5 = Eagle)

Tees:
The tees play at lengths suiting most all skill levels and the spacing of each tee set is impressive. Move up or back a set and you can see how the course can play entirely different.

The back tees are set at angles to visually intimidate the more accomplished player with forced carries and limiting site of what “may” or “may not” exist further down the fairway. The forward tees however move the less accomplished golfer in front of the hazard giving them a better glimpse of the hole promoting confidence off the tee.

Each tee was in very good condition. For a course that just opened it was impressive to say the least.

Fairways:
The bent grass fairways were in perfect condition running fairly firm during our round. Unlike other course openings the troubled past of the clubs opening has allowed for maturity not normally expected with a new course.

The routing is superb meandering through the hardwoods on the front nine with a more open links style feel on the back nine. The fairways are visually beautiful when observed from the tee.

Rough:
The course has two cuts of rough including an intermediate cut just off the fairway and a lush thicker cut four yards beyond the first cut. With the winter we had rough is truly "rough" in every sense of the word.

The rough around the green was in great condition. There were some minor spotty areas way off the beaten path but with the serious wind gusts we played in our balls were not in the normal missing spots.

Traps:
The course is very well bunkered providing ample protection both around the greens and along the fairways. The condition of all traps was perfect.

When combined with the various other hazards the traps provide a constant partner protecting the other side of the target. If the fairway is guarded by water or hardwood trees on one side of the fairway there is a bunker guarding the opposite side. If a green is flanked by a water hazard on one side then a bunker or two guards the opposite side.

The 17th green is a perfect example; water hazard on the right and back side of the green and two bunkers protecting the left side. Even though the target isn't extremely narrow your approach shot has to be measured.

Greens:
The greens at 1757 Golf Club are in pristine condition. I can honestly say they are some of the most perfect and true greens I've had the pleasure to play.

The speed was quick and if you didn't get some height on your approach shot, you can expect some firm bounces…especially if you hit the down slope or wrong side of the green.

The Par-3s have multiple tiers requiring more exact approach shots that what can appear at the tee. If you're on the wrong tier expect some tough two putts to save your par.

Amenities:
If we could give a 10 star rating we would for 1757 Golf Club. It's one of the most impressive daily fee venues I've ever had the privilege to visit.

The 16,000-square-foot clubhouse is very impressive where the private club atmosphere still lingers from its past life. The new 1757 restaurant is now open and makes for a great post round are to relax and enjoy a meal or drink.

The six-acre practice facility is the best I've personally ever seen. The normal mats at the 56-station range are non-existent and replaced by state-of-the-are SportTurf. This stuff is the closest thing to grass you'll ever experience. Not to mention the grass tee area as well. The short game has course condition greens for putting and chipping with lengths up to 100-yards to work on every imaginable short game shot.

Once the course gets a yardage book it should be perfect. Currently you have to rely on the sprinkler heads and barber pools for distance yardage markers.

Staff Services:
When we arrived at the facility everyone on the 1757 Golf Club staff was informative and helpful. Even during the grand opening everything was run very smooth from the service inside the clubhouse to the starter.

The starter was very informative explaining with the anticipated pace and was in constant contact with the marshal trying to manage pace before we teed off.

There was a beverage and food cart making rounds. The cart was fully stocked with beverages, sandwiches and snacks. Now with all 18 holes open the course does route back to the clubhouse for provisions if needed.

Pace of Play:
Our round progressed at a 5:15 pace. Most posted expected pace of play on the weekend is 4:30. We were waiting on every tee and being pushed by a twosome behind. In the middle of our round the twosome let a single through of which we offered to join us once we were still waiting before teeing off on just about every hole.

Sometimes management can only do so much, which is why were giving an average 3-ball rating. Even before we teed off we could hear rumblings over the starter’s walkie talkie. There was one group causing pace issues out on the course.

It's a delicate balance for any marshal. I know management was doing its best and with the grand opening, I'm sure some kinks are still being worked out.
