An exceptional course that is fun and challenging to play. Most tee shots require accuracy over distance, some are just grip it and rip it, and some are lay-ups to the right yardage. Some of the greens came right out of A.W. Tillinghast's repertoire, like buried elephants in the greens. This is definitely a course where you need to select the right set of tees to play. The day I played, the rough was about 3 inches high making it difficult to find balls that missed the fairways and greens.

This course is a real ball buster. Tight with blind shots and the greens have plenty of angles and slope. I hit a great shot on 16th hole up hill to a back pin. The ball landed just past the pin rolled just a bit then rolled back down the green to the front fringe, making for an impossible two putt. I'm all for challenge that is fair some of the greens and shots at General's Ridge seem unfair. The conditions we're good but it wouldn't be a course I would make a tee time more than once a year.

After playing the course for the 40th time yesterday, I say the same thing that I did after the first time. I hate this course! Good place to work on your iron game, but that's about the only positive aspect. Fairways are in good shape if you can hit them. Greens running much slower than usual. Go play it only if you need to be humbled!

All I have to say is you better be able to hit every club in your bag with accuracy. Golf carts have GPS. The course was is good shape. The layout is extremely difficult. Fairways are all sloped and the greens are rolling and sloped also. Some blind shots make the course even harder if you haven't played here before. Staff was friendly, a great challenge if you want or bring a friend watch their game fall apart. I had one birdie, a few pars, and the rest I don't want to talk about. Bring balls!

Played the course today and unfortunately they were aerating the front nine so played the back nine twice. Paid $35 and it was well worth the money. Very challenging course and yes the greens are very tricky. For a municipal course it was in good shape, and there are better conditioned courses in the area, but for the money a very good value. If you live in the area and have not played it get out there. I am originally from Rochester, NY and not too many of the public or semi-private courses in my area had the challenge that General's Ridge. Very friendly staff.

The course was in great shape when I played it on april 6th. It's a very tight course and a difficult layout. The greens were very tough as was the pin placement that day. This proved to make it a very difficult course but I think everyone who has a chance should play it.

Weather you play from the blue or white tees the course remains tight. There are a number of blind shots and the greens generate a few three putts. I believe the greens would ever be difficult for the pros.

This course has amazing sites from the elevated tee boxes. The course plays short from the whites though the challenges even out the distance. I personally will never forget my perfect drive on number 9 that hit a granite boulded in the middle of the fairway and landed in the woods. This course could use a little work on the back 9, but all in all a decent course.

Course is tough for hackers. Greens are tough for everyone. Short course but could be one of the best in N. VA. if the greens were not so hilly. A Pro would have trouble with the greens. Before playing in the Fall find out the leaf condition. Too many leafs are a big problem. Some blind shots need a warning bell. Tee shot on 9, approch on 10, 11. Friendly staff.

Pretty good conditions but this course is VERY hilly. Forget about walking, in fact if it's cart path only, forget it.

Generally a nice course, but like most municipals around the area, play is SLOW on weekends. Figure on close to 5 hours for a round. Other reviewers pitch this course as brutally difficult -- I played the white tees and didn't find it nearly as tough as advertised. Greens are difficult to read, and a few have layouts that a poor approach shot nearly guarantees a 3 putt. Generally a nice course, in good shape after a difficult August -- I'll play there again.

I've played golf all over the U.S....this has to be the hardest course I've played by a long shot. It makes P.B Dye in Maryland look easy. If you want to treat yourself to one hell of a challenging course...try this one out. It's tough for all 18 holes.

One of the most fun courses I have played on in 30 years. VERY difficult to play, but it adds a lot adventure to every shot. This course has a pair of par 3's that are worth the money alone. Beautiful course! If they would be able to ask for more money this course would easily be the best in Northern Va. The only thing they need to fix are some of the cart paths and the greens were a little rough, but other than that I would recommend this to anyone.

Lousy conditions. Too many hackers. Hardly a challenging course, unless you like amusement parks. Staff encouraged to argue with clients. Played it once, and that was all I needed to know.

The hardest public course in the area, I submit, and maybe one of the hardest I've ever played. Blind shots, uneven fairways, nutty changes in elevation, greens that pick your pocket on every hole, woodsy trouble pressing in on every fairway. . .enough to make a grown man cry. Or better, laugh: Check your ego at the door, forget about keeping score and enjoy an impossible, beautiful course. Curse the designer at the 19th hole.
