My review will echo others' opinions: some real tight holes, decent conditions, reasonable price, probably not too crowded. Beyond that, I'll just say this is a pretty blah course, an unimaginative design from the era of Robert Trent Jones: one long tree-lined par 4 after another. It particularly bugs me that there are only 4 Par 3's on the 27-hole property. The best feature of the course is that it is easily walkable.

This course was in the worst shape of any I've played this year. I'm sure the rain this week had some effect on conditioning, but it shouldn't have been this severe. The course looked as though it hadn't been touched in a week.

Fairfax National is a nice, older course. It has small greens and tight fairways, lined by tall, mature trees. Wilderness was in good shape. Bull Run had a few holes were the fairways were pretty beat up; overall, not too bad for late August. Pace of play for our round was decent for a busy Saturday afternoon that included the presence of many hackers with errant shots. Overall, its one of the best bargains in the area that I enjoy playing. Also, it’s a great walking course.

Wilderness course is somewhat tight with a bit of breathing room left or right when you hit into the adjacent fairways. Problem is slow play when you don't keep your shots in your own fairway. Greens on this nine were very very small and require precise approach shots. Bull Run is very narrow through the fairways which leads to a lot of slow play as golfers search the woods and under trees for their shots. Play during the week was $45 included cart.

The courses were in decent condition. Both courses are tight, with Bull Run course being almost too much so. Biggest complaint about this place is course management, we made our turn on Columbus Day only to find a 45 minute wait to tee off on the back nine. Apparently, the groundskeeper had decided to close one of the 9s for aeration, on a holiday. After sitting around for 30 minutes, we were sent off on the other open course. No apologies, no offers for a complimentary future round, nada. In general, this is a decent course, but I'll choose one of the many other great options in the area for golf at this price.

I played Fiarfax National Wilderness/Bull Run in July 2004. I found the course to be generally in good condition, especially the tee boxes and fairways. The greens however were in fair condition at best, and were very fast even a day after heavy rain. The greens were clearly suffering from heavy use. The course is challenging, with enough water, marsh and tree trouble to discourage duffers and challenge better players. With a discount coupon the greens fees of 25/40 bucks (weekday/weekend) is about right given the quality of the course. But it is not a $70 course.
